Burris Goes to Washington

Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich announces his choice of Roland Burris to fill Barack Obama's Senate seat Tuesday.

I think that Roland Burris should be the junior senator from Illinois. This is one Blagojevich decision that I totally agree with and although the cloud of scandal is hovering, let Burris go to Washington in peace. He is by far the most qualified, the cleanest (although he did fork over a few bucks to the governor's campaign), and he's being backed by Congressman Bobby Rush and a powerful "we shall overcome" - Black ministers' alliance. Could the senate deny Roland Burris from being sworn in? Fireworks in D.C. and Illinois politics! Stay tuned as Burris goes to Washington.

From what I've seen and heard of Roland Burris I have to agree with you GML. I think that in the face of some scandals people stop looking at things objectively.

In this case the naysayers are hee-ing and hawing and will do regardless of the merits of Blago's appointee, and that's counter-productive and emotionalism.

Matt R.:

I say let mr roland go to washington. It is not his fault that blogo is a dirtbag!

Jean Ishmon:

I say why not he has served well.

Monica P, Austin Community:

Blagovich has not been found guilty of any crime and has not stepped down from his office as governor. For all practically purposes he must continue his job as governor. This appointment must be respected and honored. Regardless, or allegations that have yet to be found true.

Zack:

My problem with this situation is that Mr. Burris knows the old saying about "watching the company that you keep". If he's so qualified, then he shouldn't need to align himself with an embattled governor.

Call me precocious or pretentious, but I don't think the FBI just sits around making up charges on people all day. If they have reason to believe that you are doing wrong, you probably are.

I was just so taken aback that ministers, especially two of the most respected ones in Chicago (who shall remain nameless) would turn worship into a media circus. Very sickening! I even spoke to some folks at the church in question, and they weren't happy about what happened yesterday.

According to the United States Constitution, you are innocent until proven guilty. If America operated in accordance to the constitution, why are the many jails throughout this country filled to capacity with individuals awaiting trials?

The investigating process of Governor Blagojevich is being done without interruption of his occupation because his Governorship guarantees him the prestigious and legal authority to separate himself from such allegations.

Until he has been proven to have committed a crime, leave the man alone!!

GO ROLAND BURRIS!!!

Renegade:

Burris is extremely inspiring. I don't agree with seating him, but I have to admire how tenacious he's been -- without being obnoxious.

He's straightforward, forceful, logical and still extremely gracious. It's a rare personality mix. While I like him, I'd prefer for Blago to stay completely out of the Senate seat business since tapes suggest he seems to think its a commodity to barter. We can't let Blagojevich disrespect the process and get away with it.

I think pitching Burris on as a racial replacement -- as Bobby Rush and others are doing-- is sickening. You can't just approve the appointment from a corrupt process just to have keep black representation. That's not a compelling reason.

Lastly -- I should apologize to Monica for my comment on the other thread.. She's sharp, assertive, did a good job pressing her guests, and was an interesting host, even if a bit harsh and prickly. She did a good job; I'm simply a loyalist to the host and his personality.

P.S. Speaking of you, host, How can you "totally agree" with the Burris appointment when you were sooo pro Jesse Jackson, Jr? Where's your Jackson support now? Would you be saying Burris is most qualified if Jackson were appointed? Seems mighty convenient that Burris is now your favorite. And why is your buddy Jackson so quiet now, by the way.

Lisa:

Sorry but Roland Burris has been out of the political game for too long to be effective. I respect his clean record, and for an Illinois politician that says alot!! But we need someone who will be effective. I can't help but be somewhat suspicious of why Burris is being so persistent to take a position that even his political allies have refused due to the seat being considered "tainted", not to mention he's willing to go to court for it.

The question I have for the Democrats who support Roland Burris is, during the Presidential Election, didn't Democrats come against John McCain because he was out of touch due to his age? What makes Roland Burris different? The one thing I will give to John McCain is that he has always been an active member of Congress.

I would have liked a special election so the people could choose who would best represent them. After all, we did a pretty good job in selecting the next President!

Nina Alday:

I do not believe that Burris should be our next senator. He was appointed by Blago under wrong circumstances. I do not believe that he will be representing us to the fullest.

tom mccarthy:

Sec. of State White signed off today for a special election that Gov. Blagojevich assigned to fill U.S. Congressional Dist. 5 Why did Sec.White signed off on this paper work today and refused to sign Sen. Elected Burris paper work ? Best wishes, Tom, Elgin

Kenneth Riley:

Let's make a logical and face saving choice that everyone can agree upon for the last two years of Mr. Obamas' senate seat. Let's ask Carol Moseley-Braun to return to the Senate. She was the first African American woman elected to the Senate, she has familiar with the operations and protocol of the Senate. She has the experience and the ability to hit the ground running; remember we are only asking someone to represent Illinois for two years until we have an election. She is a proven winner and has served our country twice and also ran for President. Let's give Mr. Durbin someone who doesn't need a learning curve, someone that knows how to work across the isle and get things done. If we want to put a steak on the black eye Illinois politics has already received let's find Carol and ask her to sit in for two years and get a few things done for the President Elect. After all it was her close lost to Patrick Fitzgerald that started the domino effect that eventually caused Mr. Obama rise to stardom

Ron G:

roland burris is not a man that is concerned with the needs of the state if Illinois, as evidenced by his actions his actions are all self serving. he has run for all kinds of public office (indicating that he is only interested in being in a position of power, no matter too what office it might be). And his current behavior proves that he is not interested in public service but public power. If he were interested in the best for the people and the state of Illinois, he would have turned down the appointment and advised that gov. blago to decline to make any appointments. Burris should have advised Blago to resign
