Racism is Over: K-O'd by Obama in '08

Courtesy: Sun Times

mary mitchell.jpgWill Sun Times columnist, Mary Mitchell, agree with Garrard that racism is extinct?

Garrard says it's official. Racism has left the shores of the United States. There are no racists here anymore. Everyone is free and we have no need to tell ethnic jokes...well we can tell them now without feeling fearful, inhibited, and racist. Well, that kind of defeats the purpose.

When you leave your house today, pay close attention - taking note that hate groups have disbanded, institutional racism is passe', and people are getting hired today based on their qualifications, not their skin color. We are free today - No Chinese internment camps, no holocaust, no slavery, no native American eradication. We are free because Garrard says so, ...and because Obama is president - elect. Mary Mitchell joins me later for a conversation on racism and it's disappearance.

I can never tell when an Aquarius mind is using satire.

At any rate, yes let's talk about this nirvana of a post-racial America that everyone hoped Barack Obama's election would usher in.

It seems like race and racism became more of a factor after his election -- and not just with anti-black hate groups who are now recruiting-- but also with black people who sought to tribalize more than ever, claiming Obama's win as their own, as some sort of race accomplishment. It was like an orgy of race feasting.

As a black woman, yes, I do understand the traumatic racial history of America and how soothing this win must be for those who think in terms of tribes, but we must remember that at its heart the crusade for civil rights is the push to see everyone as human and to push beyond tribal identity politics.

Racism is more than institutional oppression and personal prejudice; It is also the use of ethnic tribes to determine a person's identity, worth, intellect, morality and criminality. Minorities are just as guilty of that as the majority.

If you don't want race to be used to oppress don't use it to elevate. People cannot have it both ways. Either race is a significant factor or it isn't.

I want that post-racial nirvana. I confess, I'm an idealist -- but we have to push past the comfort zone of tribes first.

why are we continuing to accept these corporation raising prices on us .when they haven't taken a hit in there pockets frist . cut ur salaries frist and cut back on all the pork and then we can talk about raising prices . let see the payrolls of these board members .

Racism over? Strange it is how dangerous the intoxicant of euphoria is.

I believe that we as African Americans (some of us) need be very circumspect of the ideologies that we rant during this post Obama win.

Funny, that so many in the African American community couldn't get on board b/c they didn't think that he was Black enough morphing over to callling Barack Obama a type of Messiah.

There is a fever pitch in the camps of White Supremacist groups since this election has wrapped up. It is even clear in certain strong code language being spewed by those like Limbaugh and Hannity telling people to stock up on guns as to prepare them (their listeners) for a revolution of sorts.

Is it dead? It will never have a chance for death until everyone (particularly media figures) is on board to say the same thing about it, that it is a hideous mindset to bear.

Until we disspell the fear of the unknown between different groups of people, of which fear the Limbaughs & Hannitys of the media thrive on (in the absence of fear would be the absence of them), RACISM will always have a home here in the good ole U.S of A.

Adrienne Irmer:

I will have to whole-heartedly agree with Charles-- racism still lives here in this country, in a level of abundance still wholly unacceptable. Extremely right-winged talking heads are truly disgusting to me in their continual attempts to awaken the next unibomber, or Tim McVeigh... or worse! Our President, Barack Obama (gosh, that felt really good to say), has made it here because ENOUGH people in this country believed in his ideals and want to change this country as we know it-- move out of the past and into a future where we can begin to practice what our Bill of Rights preaches: that ALL men are created EQUAL!

The rabid espousings of hate and planting of ridiculous fears into the minds of already weak individuals with the sole goal of creating a faction who seeks to hurt this wonderful man truly, truly frightens me! This country was scared into surrendering our rights to privacy behind a sketchy 'terrorist attack' so the Limbaughs and Hannity's attempts to scare their equally disturbing listeners into 'action' and 'arming themselves' is beyond crazy, it should be ILLEGAL! Freedom of speech does not protect you if you are surreptitiously trying to spark a hate revolution; trying to galvanize your KLAN to action!!! Why they remain on the air is unknown to me, but as long as they exist, as long as ignorant fear still lingers in this free world, there will continue to be rasism!

What President Obama (it still feels amazing to say this) means, other than HOPE, is that the MAJORITY of this country is no longer afraid of what and whom they may not fully understand; America no longer wants to maintain its perma-glass ceiling. If the majority of us can embody this and continue to do so, eventually we will convince those so old in their thought processes that they truly need to wake up and smell the roses of enlightenment, because while their ignorance is bliss... its truly a STAIN on our flag!!!

Thank you President Obama!!!

Melody Heller:

Oh absolutely it still exsists.... That's the reason I chose to leave Tennessee with my one year old son. I was born and raised here, and raised my 20 year old daughter here until she was 14, then we moved to the Nashville area. After living there for 5 years and having my son there I knew there was no way I wanted to raise him in an enviroment where there is still racism. As for the fair hikes well.... Gas rates have gone sky high and with the fact that seniors can now ride for free, which I think is really nice.. I guess we are due for an increase. I do believe that it is very nice that senior citizens can ride for free. After all there are cities and villages such as Niles that has it's own free bus system. Which I'm sure is paid for by the residents property taxes. All in all I think the hike is justifiable.

Sophia:

Racism still exist. An African American winning the presidential election can not and will not change the minds of many racist. People have their own beliefs. Some people raise their children to hate based on race alone. Racism has been happening for years and years and will continue to happen. We just have to face it and deal with it the best we can. Make the best out of it. Its interesting how after Obama won the election police in Chicago are upset. I've heard them saying things like "your president can't help you on this one," I'm like wow was that really caused for? It seems like some people are mad that people are happy Obama won. To me Obama winning the election was history because so many of my ancestors died for African Americans to have the right to vote and to end segregation, abolish the Jim Crow laws. It gave me hope. It gave young men in my community hope. So yes I am proud. Yes my peers are proud. Yes many in my community are proud. There is nothing wrong with being proud. Police are here to serve and protect, if the police in our community are against us then really are they going to serve and protect us...I THINK THAT'S A BIG NO!

Penny:

C'mon, bruh! Put that FlavrAde away, and stop playing. Racism is anything but dead here on Planet Earth in the US of A. America is still overrun with bigotry and prejudice that will take centuries to un-institutionalize completely.

Now, I'll give you that we're off to a hopeful start, having elected a Black man to our Nation's highest Office, after two ceturies of existence under the Constitution. I, too, thank and praise the good Lord in heaven that we have finally ratified the Constitutiinal creed that ALL MEN AND WOMEN really are CREATED EQUAL!!! But, until we as one humanity can finally define ourselves as a single race of human beings, and not as many races obtusely diversified by the most superficial esthetics of our banal ethnicity, there will always be institutionalized racism, and, consequently, unjustied xenophobia.

Chelsea:

Garrad McClendon, racism is extinct, please inform the public as to where you received such information. President elect Barrack Obama did not end racism, however he did bring hope to many white American people hope in releasing them from this terrible economic situation. A situation that has caused so many of them to loose their jobs, and their homes. Finally they were compelled to deal with very hard and disturbing times. Unlike black people who have become accustom to coping with very difficult situations. The notion that I gathered from Barrack Obama recieving so many White American votes was first, in regards to Sarah Palin's lack of knowledge on just about everything American, especially foreign policies, second her inability to identify with the average working White American, and finally her incompetence. Sarah Palin ruined Jhon McCain chance of getting into office. White people suffered dire consequences for electing Goerge Bush as the President and now they look at Barrack as a way out of this financial slump, because Jhon McCain did not offer hope to the working white Americans, but hope to the wealthy ones. Lets examine the facts Jhon McCain did received 65 million votes and Barrack 75 million if these numbers are not correct please let me know. I also heard on the news either CLTV or Fox that White Voters still prefered J. McCain, but his policies where in fact to similar to President Bush and who wants to deal with another great depression for four more years. Now lets tackle this issue racism what is racism a thought or belief that one race is better than another race. Who decided to take this type of inclination towards another group of people, and why? Who decided to fill our childrens history books, with a bunch of European discoveries and accomplishments 98% of them being untrue. Who decided to rape Black People mentally, spirtually, and physically? Who took Egypt out of Africa? Who was it that came in and completely destroyed and broke up black families, murdered Black men, raped Black women, and sold our children? Who came out with published and accepted books on white superiority and black inferiorty? Im quite sure you are familiar with the Willie Lynch letter, and the horrible, detrimental effect this letter had on Black people. This is one of the reasons why Black people are still mentally and spirtually dead, yes we are the walking dead. If someone is constantly told their people were only slaves and did not participate in any of the great accomplishments of this country history than what can you expect. IF a black child turns on the television and sees nothing but white people on every station in positive roles such as Lawyers, Doctors, Judges, Scientist, Archaeologist, Coporate business owners, e.t.c. and a few blacks scattered here and there in those positions than what? However we do have Black people on television always in entertainment roles acting like bafoons or dribbling a ball down the court or running with a ball across the field. Our children suffer from institutianalized racism, a system set up to limit their options all the way down to just being entertainers. An education system that teaches you to go and work for someone else and not to have your own or help your community. It is a vicious cycle that we are constantly caught in and it started with our parents not knowing or having anything to offer or pass down to their children or grandchildren. This cycle reminds me of a comment Oprah Winfrey made about her mother telling her when she gets older that she hopes she finds some good white people to work for. I reiterate a vicious cycle that is passed on and well displayed in our communities, but we can accept some of the blame to we are definitely not exempt from that. Racism will be extinct when Black people are educated on the importance of having our own business and schools. We need to put more jobs in our communities, extracurriclar activities for our children, positive activities that will teach them to utilize their time in a positive way. We also could use Parenting courses, classes on real black history, money management, investing, stocks, e.t.c.. We need to bring back Black Wall Street in all of our communnities and the Black people that do make it and become successful should come back to the community and share that wisdom. Whatever happened to each one teach one? No Garrard racism is not extinct.

EUREKA:

i think it still exists but as the years have come had to be masked and now will have to be deeper masked because of the symbol that Barack represents now the racists white, black or hispanic will be reduced to having to say and do their nasty ways and things in their own homes and by their sick selves because they will dare not speak out in the open that garbage

R.Qabeel:

I cant believe that you uttered such stupidity that racism is dead. So when the next horrendous racist act occurs what will you say the.... that its an isolated incident. Wake Up!

Rich:

Love the show Mr. Mclendon, keep it up!

I saw Mary on your show; she's great too.

however, I was disappointed in that I found her obtuse. She used a lot of pronouns, i.e., referring to "they" as if there was some Central conspiracy against Obama.

One example comes to mind: she said racism is not dead b/c "They" were so critical of Obama's controversial pastor J. Wright , but, not so to McCain. She pointed out she did not even know McCains' religion.

True, perhaps, but in a campaign, any particular reporter can ask whatever they want of a candidate. All is fair game.

I think the general idea with Wright was that Obama was making poor choices when taking his children to listen to what Wright said, and how he said it. Obama ultimately decided the same, because he did break from his church.

And, Obama broke from his Church at his own volition; not just to appease whites. Whites voted for him, and so, I cannot see how Mary says the treatment of the Wright issue is racist.
