Palin Crashes and Burns with Charlie Gibson

"Sarah Palin, do you agree with the Bush Doctrine?"

It was sad to see Governor Palin unable to answer this question. Charlie gave her several outs and he even lobbed the question to her, underhanded, with a softball, and she still skirted the issue. Whether it's lipstick on pitbulls or pigs, make-up alone doesn't mask whether you agree or disagree with a pre-emptive strike on Pakistan.

Talk to me...what are your thoughts on Sarah Palin? Please comment.

Matt:

G,

At this time, why would she respond to a question like that? It was evident to me that her nor mccain care for bush however they are walking carefully past that issue beyond what was stated at the convention which was they (the republicans) and some of the democrats did not do a good job in washington. I think they should both come out blasting bush, but that is not the strategy to capture the undecided voters. As has been the theme of this election, the promise of change is what will sway the middle, so the real question is who do you believe can command the respect of congress, successful implement programs and policies and correct the mistakes of bush and others?

Synthia Rose:

Palin most definitely filibustered through parts of the interview. I predict these interviews will be the start of her erosion. Her image had been pretty Teflon, with most fanatics allowing criticism to slide right off. Now we're getting a test of her political intellect and savvy.

Still, um, she's doing better than Joe Biden, who unnecessarily suggested recently that Hillary should have been picked for VP over him. Did Hillary supporters leaning toward McCain/Palin really need that, Joe? He's the worst wingman I've ever seen.

Francis Serra:

Why is it that Garrard Mcclendon and the rest of the "drive-by" media are the only ones that ASSUME Sarah Palin failed in the Gibson interview?. Even good old Charlie didn't know what he was asking. There is more that one aspect to the so-called Bush doctrine. You guys keep trying to bash Sarah. I know you all will be sorry come November when she and McCain are elected and then in January when they are inaugurated. Ta! Ta! Libs

T Rocks:

I can't believe the hypocrisy of the media and the left toward this woman. She is a strong, smart and very capable person from a state where the people have to be self-sufficient and take responsibility for their own choices and actions. The media gave Obama nothing but accolades and praise as a 'historic' choice that MUST be our next President, never even a HINT of critical questioning. Sarah Palin comes along with a historic opportunity to take the Vice Presidency, not the Presidency, and the liberal media cannot stand it! They've demonized her from the beginning and have falsely said she voted to have alaska secede from the united states (wrong, her husband, 10 years ago, belonged to a party that at one time advocated secession), they've falsely said she banned books from the library in her town (wrong again, the librarian the media used as their very weak 'source' on the story, says she never said Sarah Palin banned books, but that Palin's church had a couple of members who wanted a book on a gay pastor removed - the book was NOT ever removed. This country is in a serious fight for it's future with the liberal media and the media basically is now a far left political party themselves, they advocated openly their far left beliefs and beam it into our living rooms every single day. US Citizens need to start questioning the way the media forces their views into the public and realize that when the average american watches 30 hours of TV a week or more, the media has a stranglehold on the public debate in this country. The media is dividing us and they sensationalize every story for profit and to the detriment of the US. Sarah Palin is as qualified for higher office as Obama, but there's one key difference, she is only running for Vice President! In 99% of administrations the VP has a small role. Obama is running for President, the guy will put our country in the same weak state that Clinton left us in with poor intelligence services and military to protect us and a government that will tax us while providing working people with virtually none of the federal program dollars he's planning. 80% of Americans live in rural or suburban areas and communities not unlike Sarah Palin's hometown, not the big cities of the northeast with their elitist attitude that they know it all. Vote for a real American in Palin, not a guy who's entire life has been about one issue - civil rights issues.

Ron Hahn:

It is sad that Charlie failed to formulate an inteliigent, unambiguous question.

There are are at least four different policy statements commonly referred to as the Bush doctrine.

The interview disclosed more about Charlie's shortcomings as an informed and capable interviewer.

His failure to distinguish the difference between praying at time of war that you are on the side of God as opposed to praying that God be on your side, once again demonstrates that it was Charlie, and not Sarah, who was not ready for prime time

JCF:

You can tell by the way the question was asked it was clearly a test. While she did not exactly what the bush doctrine was, you note that her answer was correct! While she did not recite ver batim what the doctrine was, she recited by example the doctrine was, and then gave her view as to whether she agreed to it or not.

A Far cry from crashing or burning!!

Once he realizes she is holding her own, Obama will have to stop letting the media do his dirty work and actualy go after her harder!

Good luck with that!

Pam:

Note to Francis. So the liberal media is picking on Sarah Palin, questioning her ability to serve as vice president. What are her qualifications? How will she solve the problems if John McCain should become ill in office and dies? She is an unknown quantity at least to people who question, think and rightly want to know whether you can really get to know someone in 2 weeks. What is her position on the economy and all its problems with the mortgage industry, collapse of the housing market, failure of 10 banks with many more in serious financial trouble, the impact on hardworking and struggling American citizens, jobs that corporations have sent overseas for the past decade (and the US government gives them tax breaks as they do this). John Kerry in his runoff against Bush constantly brought this up and said we must at the very least not reward corporations for sending American jobs overseas. What was America's response? Nothing. America wanted a likeable, sociable fella George Bush who they were comfortable with and could have a beer. It hardly matters that he couldn't rub two sticks together to make a fire. What does Sarah Palin think the government should do about the deregulation of the financial industry that help bring about the economic problems we now have? The Republicans wanted less government in business, they believe the less intrusion the better. So in the meantime, who looks out for the working man and woman when financial institutions get greedy and start manipulating the market, giving out thousands of bad mortgages that they knew would fail. They made their profit at the expense of the American people, and the Republicans and Democrats allowed this to happen. But which candidate is prepared and capable of understanding the dynamics of this situation from all angles and not serve the corporate interests? Phil Graham, who John McCain has as a top ecomomic adviser was one of the main people for the deregulation and is a lobbyist for UBS(a Scottish financial giant). this is who John McCain has as an adviser. The one who said Americans were whiners. Oh yes, he, McCain and Palin are the ones that people will entrust with our economic situation if you vote the Republicans in. McCain even has said on record that he does not fully understand economics. What qualifications does Sarah Palin bring to the table to supplement his lack of economic expertise? Can Sarah Palin shore up John McCain's weaknesses? Does America know what she can do to complement John McCain to make the Republican party have a well-rounded ticket? Barack Obama and Joe Biden complement each other perfectly. Joe Biden was vetted and his record speaks for itself. Obama has been running for 18 months and the media as recently as a month ago was still saying that they don't know him fully. It is incredulous that in 2 weeks time Sarah Palin is known, loved, adored, and accepted without question. Anyone who dares question her background, her capabilities, her judgement are called sexist and unfair. Just explain to me how she was vetted and passed muster in America's eyes in such a short period of time?

Francis Serra:

Well Pam, if you profess to know so much, why haven't we seen your name running for office. At this time I will place a suggestion; if Garrard and Pam et al know so much, we should appoint them all and throw the elected bums out! Tsk! Tsk!

Pam:

Hello Francis. I don't think it matters whether I or Garrard runs for office. The question that you and every American, democrat, republican and independent, should be asking is why doesn't John McCain and Sarah Palin address the concerns of everyday Americans such as the economic crisis, failure of the mortgage industry with bad loans that should never have been approved, how to keep people in their homes instead of throwing them in the streets, educating America's youth and finding a way to keep so many children from dropping out of school, how to get along with the rest of the world and regain the respect of those nations. In short, I would like to see the media and the candidates get back to the pressing issues of the day which affect all Americans. I am not interested in spending a week talking about the lipstick on pigs remark and whether it is a reference to Sarah Palin or not. It was quite clear to anyone who listened to the entire statement that it was a reference to John McCain's stance on the issues. And yet all week you could not find a news channel or talk show that did not devote almost the entire hour to that topic with hardly any time given to matters of substance. Barack planned a talk on education to give his plan outline for the school situation, but instead had to spend most of the time answering questions about the lipstick remark. Joe Biden has been going from state to state campaigning and speaking on the issues. Have you or anyone you know seen or know what he talked about? I know that I have not seen one story about him campaigning. We should all ask ourselves why is that? This country has an important decision to make in less than 2 months and we all need to get back to the issues of substance that truly affect this country. Oh by the way, Alan Greenspan, former head of the Federal Reserve stated that John McCain's economic plan is not sound. He said that it consists of 3 trillion (I don't remember if number is correct) in tax cuts with no comparative cuts in federal spending which will lead us further in the red with the federal budget. McCain's tax cuts favor the corporations over the middle class, and I am not making this up. Check any number of new sources to verify this. Obama's plan will mean tax cuts for 95% of Americans.

simone:

francis...
play nice now...

you're perfectly welcome to support the republican ticket... as are those who choose to support the democratic ticket...

this is part of the game, it happens this way every 4 years...or haven't you been paying attention...

Mr. Gibson asked a question, clarified what he was asking... and she didn't respond to what he asked.... simple as that...

why attack those who noticed that?

its JUST an election...and Sarah won't be paying any of your bills the day after the elections.

stop treating her like your benefactor...

ok?

There are a lot of emotions flying about in here. The irony of it all is that many of the same things Republicans are defending Sarah Palin about are things they concocted and hurled at Barack Obama.

Now all of a sudden the questions that are asked are unfair. There are things that the Republicans say should be off the table only when it's a disadvantage to them.
For all of you that are so passionate for Mrs. Palin b/c you feel she is being dealt w/ unrighteously where was your voice of decency when some swooned their radio microphones w/ obvious false suggestions of Sen. Obama's religious faith and patriotism all in the name of FEARMONGERING?

Gov. Palin put her family and motherly involvement out front as her platform to run on as well as her experience in Alaskan government. So when questions arise about how she told her 17 year old daughter it was her daughter's choice concerning her daughter's unborn child to keep the baby or not the public has a right to ask "how is this when she doesn't believe in the right of the women in the country to choose"?

For Sen. Obama "Rock Star" and "Celebrity" were terms laid upon him by the so called "right" meant as anything but a badge of honor. Oh, but now Republicans invite these descriptions as criteria for praise for Gov. Palin.

As far as judging Alaska to be, as a blogger mentioned several comments up, a place where people are "self sufficient and take responsibility for their own actions and choices"; well that is another testament to a fact that there is not much for her to do after all in a state where the population is 4 times less than that of the CITY of Chicago.

There are a few issues that seem to have missed the Palin radar as far as her task to undertake as governor. One, we know is to tell the truth about things like who started the reform in her state and what really happened with the "bridge to nowhere" since she's still adding that to her resume'.

Second, as a woman you would think that you would hear more about what she's done in her State to protect "WOMEN". Since 1976 Alaska has ranked in the top 5 for the highest rate of rape per 100,000 inhabitants and its forcible rape is 2.5 times higher than the national average.

With such high rates of violence toward women in her State how can she not be pro choice especially in cases of RAPE and INCEST with so much rape going on in her State? (Not that I'm pro choice)

The only reason we all are talking about Sarah Palin is b/c Sen. McCain was far from the life of the party, literally! Republicans have flung her in the spot light to bolster every nook and cranny about her Hoping that everyone else would make the same big deal about "nothing special".
They'd hoped to capture some of the flash that emanates from Sen. Obama. Okay, for a moment it worked until an interview when she OPENED HER MOUTH.

Now let us all sit back and watch what she does to herself the more this communications-journalism Bachelor of Science recipient talks.

Ray:

I’m a independent and I don’t like how the Democrats let the Republicans run all over them and the rights of the American Citizens for the last eight years, I also don’t like the way the state of Illinois is being controlled by the Democrats. What the public needs to do is to stay focused on the issues, unless the issues are not important to them.
The Republican Doctrine: Lie, cheat, steal and distort the truth to win. Don’t worry about integrity, honor, respect and the truth because most American Citizens are so blissfully ignorant they will believe anything.

Sanel:

This woman is a fake just like the campaign of those she runs with, the poor attacks she and her republican friends made against Obama should be seen for what they really are = they are scared so everything goes, they know their glass floors have cracked and it's just time before they fall through. America has been blind for too long but not anymore and I strongly believe people don't want to be blind folded anymore.

S. Holt:

Fantastic show tonight. You covered many relevant issues. I just wish you and C. Kelly had spent more time on dissecting Lying Palin. How can anybody think she is able to be VP? She barely got her BS degree and no travel experience, no problems to solve other than Alaska, moose hunting, PTA agendas and lipstick.
Amazing! Republicans are looking for a savior or white knight. Obama must stand up for his rights, our rights. Stay on the economy and health care, which she knows nothing about. Please do another show about Lying Palin. The word needs to get out every day.

Francis Serra:

Wow, two NAGS on little old me. Well Pam and Simone shame on you for the fantasy lectures. If any or both of you believe what either candidate is promising, then we should end this discourse now. I always suspected that libs lived in a dream world as the history of recent politics prove. Especially the 40 some years the Dems had total control over the Congress and still 45 million plus Americans are without affordable health insurance. P.S. I always have made sure my family had health insurance; by my WORKING and caring for my family. NOT by having the gov't pay for it. And believe it or not I was not in any union, so I paid for my health insurance. Thank You.

larry:

I WAS TOLD FIRST APPEARENCE SOMETIMES TELL A LOT ABOUT YOU AND I,M WITH OBAMA 'FAMILY OFF LIMITS' BUT WHEN PALIN WAS INTRODUCED TO THE REST OF THE U.S. PEOPLE THE REPUBLICANS TRIED TO PUT A SMOKESCREEN OVER OUR HEADS FOR INSTANTS (THE INTRODUCTION OF PALIN AND FAMILY) EVERYONE WORE BLACK(TO HIDE SHAPE)THEN THE REPUBLICANS HAD HER SPREAD A BLANKET OVER HER DAUGHTER THATS PREGNANT WHILE AT THE SAME TIME HOLDING PALIN,S INFANT DAUGTHER.I FEEL THAT IF YOU SO ANTI THIS AND ANTI THAT;THAT YOU WOULDN,T ALLOW ANYONE TO HAVE YOU COVERUP THE TRUE (THE REPUBLICAN DOCTRINE)ABOUT YOUR CHILD AND GRANDCHILD TO BE. SUMING THIS UP IF YOU COVER UP SOMETHING SO PETTY AS YOUR CHILD HAVING A BABY YOUR COVERUP THE ISSUES THAT,S AT HAND WITH THE AMERICAN PEOPLE.

lamont lamaur:

palin is a fool. she is willing to endanger the world in her naked ambition to be elected to a position she is inherently unqualified for. what exactly did she say that showed even a nuance of what the world situation is? she is as trigger happy towards humans as she is towards animals.give it up people. obama is the clear choice for 08. he could not possibly do worse than bush and mccain have done in the last eight years. obama is young, smart, and unafraid of intelligent people. by picking palin as his v.p. mccain showed us how much he cares about this country. think about it. her in the white house. i hope to god she can't see my house if she is ever in the white house.
