Whether you watched The Bernie Mac Show or listened to Hot Buttered Soul, your consciousness had to feel the magnetism of Bernie Mac and the musical mindspring of Isaac Hayes. It is hard to think of two other individuals whose lives have expressed the embodiment of urban genius.
I will miss them both: Mac, for his explosive joke telling , and subtle, satirical delivery, and Hayes for The Look of Love, Shaft, and Never Gonna Give You Up. Genius is an understatement for both gentlemen.
What are your favorite works by these two men?

I'm probably telling my age with this one, but my most memorable Isaac Hayes works are of him as Chef on South Park. I love the way he blended humor, wisdom and sexuality into the role. That's saying alot for a cartoon character. :)
As for Bernie Mac, his passing is so crazy to me... last week, August 2nd to be exact, at a wedding reception I attended, the room was abuzz at how he had passed. The next day we found out it was not true....so now to hear that it is indeed true this time is sad. I remember him as the cop in "Don't Be a Menace While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood" as well as in the Ocean's 11 movies. I will also remember him for shedding light and awareness to the disease sarcoidoses (sp?). He will be missed.
R.I.P. to both actors.

My husband, children and I were very sad to hear of Bernie Mac's death. We knew he was very sick and worried about him for a week prior. We are all fans of The Bernie Mac Show. My husband and I especially enjoy the humor related to the joys and frustrations of parenting - universal comedy. It is very sad to lose him, but I prefer to think that he is now enjoying eternal happiness and it's hard to be sad about that.

I first met Bernie Mac in September of 1989 at the Cotton Club in Chicago. I was the 1989 Grand Prize Winner of the Miller Lite Beer Chicago Comedy Search Contest, and Bernie Mac was the 1990 Grand Prize Winner. We only conversed about 8-10 times between 1989 and 1991, but I could tell he was a good man in his heart.
He will be missed.
Isaac? What can you say. A legend. A legend indeed.

I love them both Issac Hayes I grew up watching and Bernie Mac I watch every day to get my laugh on. The fact that they came up to greatness, let's us all know that it is possible, if we follow our dreams. They will both be missed for who they were in their own right. My daughter called me today and said Bernie Mac is like loosing a family member I agree.

It's a very sad time in America to lose two Great Leaders of their crafts one day apart. The left giant footprints in our history. It seems like America got a little less funnier this past weekend. The Mac Man and Isaac Hayes will be Greatly Missed; not just for the things on camera. But for the things they did for many communities, and helping others to get a jump start on their careers.
RIP

I'm shocked and deeply saddened by the sudden passing of Isaac Hayes. As for his music, one can't go wrong with any of his albums, but Hot Buttered Soul and Black Moses are must haves. My favorite Ike cuts are Walk On By, By The Time I Get To Phoenix, Never Can Say Goodbye (all of which Ike's cover versions surpass the originals),It Doesn't Rain In London (a hidden gem), and Never Gonna Give You Up. RIP Ike - You can take with you the fact that YOU are Memphis' greatest musical export (Not the overrated, swivel-hipped pretty boy buried at Graceland).

Both Bernie Mac and Isaac Hayes are iconic figures that cannot be replaced. Being entertainment trailblazers they held not only our attention, but our affection. Many well-known entertainers / stars today have not reached that standard with their audiences.
On another note. Barak Obama's non-"Americanness" is said to be the next target of conservatives. All we need is to juxtapose the county that had no place for "his kind". Run the tape of dogs attaching marchers and the dirty secret of race discrimination of the 60's being televised and ask yourself. Was not it better that a leader of color come from another place? A place that allows Obama (one with just enough non-"Americaness" and black experience of the 60's) to have the great hope and outlook for a country with such an ugly past when it comes to race?

I'm deeply saddened by the loss of Isaac Hayes and Bernie Mac.
Isaac Hayes was one of the greatest arrangers of orchestral soul music in the history of popular music. His uncanny knack of taking known standards and transforming them into lush soul masterpieces was one of his most amazing (if under-appreciated) talents. He turned harps, bassoons and cellos into r & b instruments of choice.

Bernie Mac was one of the greatest. He was simply the best King of Comedy. A great human being, father and friend. He will never be forgotten. He is probably telling jokes with Richard Pryor right now as we speak. Isaac Hayes was a pioneer in R/B, funk and soul music. Both are legends that will always be in our hearts and minds. God Bless there family and friends.

Gerald and Staff:
If I could sing a song it would be,"It so hard to say goodbye to Bernie Mac." My beautiful sister Vernsetta better known as "Lady V" fell asleep ten years ago at age 41 from sarcoidosis. I learned that Bernie was diagnos twenty-five years ago, but my sister didn't have the privileage of knowing she had the decease. Vernsetta lived a year and a half prior to being diagnos. One news station reported that a family member or friend said that Bernie was looking well, my sister looked well too and I thought that she too would be find. But as we know God had other plans and I'm find with that because she was God's child (Born Again). I wonder where this decease come from. I would also like to understand the difference between lupus and sarcoidosis. Nevertheless, I hope that sciencetist do find a cure for this decease.

"Don't Let Go," in addition to "shaft" comes to mind when i think of the melodious voice of isaac hayes. i had the opportunity of seeing him in concert a while back, and was truly inspired and grateful to hear him in person. i did see 'kings of comedy' and enjoyed mr. mac very much. i don't watch television often, but the few times i caught the bernie mac show with my husband (who watches it daily), i was entertained especially when he speaks to america. he was a funny guy. my prayers continue to go up for their souls and i pray for continued strength for their families. i am a firm believer that the Will of God will never take us where His Grace cannot protect us. i now leave you with the words of the mac man: "who you wit?" conja

Truly this is saddening news of both. I can say only that if the present generation and the one to come after offers nothing uplifting for our people (as it mostly seems to be their chosen direction) we will at least be able to look back for edification b/c of these two artist and those like them.
I pray for their families.

Wow! The Mac Man gone! Gotta tell ya, we use to party live with the Mac Man every Tuesday at the old Dingbats. He was amazing and so personable. He got to know his audience. I will never forget I had lost my job and every Tuesday, I would attend the Mac Man's show he had the Macaroni's and they would dance their hearts out on that stage. He looked at me and said what's wrong tweetie? I said I got laid off today he said did you pay to get in, I said yes. He called Ali Leroy and demanded they give my cover charge back. I will never forget that! He was like a family memeber I was so distraught over his passing I could not eat for two days. I love him and he will be missed as if he was my own sibling!

Yes. Laura, Bernie Mac was great for predictable and unpredictable laughs. He was a powerful comedian with great subtleties. I am glad Spike Lee had the negotiation skills to get these guys together for Kings of Comedy. Thanks for the post. GM.
