Aldermen vs. Reverends - 15 Rounds of CPS Boxing

The punch line - "Go to school, but don't go to school." What?

Aldermen say go to school, but the preachers say don't go. If I'm a parent with a child in CPS, what should I do? What will you do?

The Thinker:

The short answer is: "priests must marry".

helen:

I think that Reverend Meeks has a hidden agenda he has his eyes on 2009 - if he really wants to flex his political muscle he should do it in the Senate. It is ironical that he is asking us to pressure lawmakers to increase funding to Chicago public schools; perhaps someone should tap him on the shoulder to remind him that he is one of the lawmakers we are supposed to pressure. I am quite sure that a school in Englewood recieves the same amount of funds as a school in Lincoln Park. I think that the problem goes deeper than funding

I am still hoping to hear those that are protesting say something to the broken culture and not just to the broken system.

This is like kids running up and down the block tearing things up and no one has anything to say until the Poe-Poes (Police) come knockin' heads and then it's time for a candle light vigil march.

I stand firm that there are other important things that are being over looked. If there is more funding given will the children safely make it to school to be able to take advantage of it?

Some people at CPS really WORK:

As a CPS Attendance and Truancy staff member I am opposed to this boycott. Meeks needs to address this issue in Springfield not the streets of Chicago. My Department fights tirelessly to keep students in school and off the streets; now he comes out of the blue and gives them a reason not to come. This counteracts everything we have tried to accomplish. Meeks and any other person who came up with this idea should have consulted our department before making such a reckless decision. If we want better schools, we need kids in the seats learning so we can increase the test scores. ( how about fighting to get rid of culturally biased test )Fight for more social services in the schools so school employees can handle the social issues that prevent our students from learning. Try fighting for parent support, get parents to assist school leaders with making sure their children get the best education possible. Provide parenting classes for parents who don’t know the proper questions to ask regarding their child’s education. Help insure our students get enough to eat and clean clothes to wear to school. If Meeks really wants to do something GET RID OF THE POLITICS THAT PREVENTS US FROM DOING OUR JOBS. I usually agree with a lot of things Rev. Meeks says but this time he lost me. Sure the Illinois Board of Education can pick any 3 months for funding but we all know they’re going to pick the months we can’t afford for them to pick.
