Spay / Neuter in Chicago?

Are there too many unwanted dogs in Chicago? What are your thoughts on spaying/neutering every dog 6 months and older? Licensed breeders should be exempt from such an ordinance, but pet owners need to have their Rexes and Fidos fixed.

Too many dogs...solution - birth control.

Beulah McLoyd:

While there are too many unwanted dogs in Chicago, the answer to this is not passing more legislation that is somewhat impossible to enforce. The reality is that responsible pet owners will probably be the ones who are penalized, while the targeted audience (people who encourage dog fights and illegal breeding practices) will continue to do what they have always done-engage in illegal practices.

I don't have a dog and don't want one. I will add though that if I did, what my dogs would do in the privacy of my own home within the limits of dogs with dogs is not the government's business as long as it doesn't bring harm to the animals.

I think a better solution is to treat this like cigarettes have been treated in Chicago. Tax things that affect pet ownership and it will make it that those who can afford to will own more pets and those who can't won't.

$100,000 for a City dog license. Just kidding! But you get the idea. :)

Nicole:

Dogs are not cigarettes! About 18,000 animals are euthanized in this city every year. We need legislation, nothing else is working or better yet, this is a probable solution so why not implement it? It has proved to be successful in other parts of the country, so why not? If a person or persons are being harmed or abused then the government intervienes, this is why we have legislation, to protect people, and yes, innocent animals too! It is one step closer or at least an honest attempt to curb the overpopulation problem. People shouldn't be able to breed dogs however and whenever they want at this time because of the amount of homeless and unwanted animals that are put to death in this city every day alone. It is a moral responsibility on our part and it cost taxpayers A LOT of money too..
