Severe Weather Could Have Been Worse

Hundreds of people in parts of northwest Indiana and Illinois spent the day cleaning up from last night’s fast-moving storms.

One home in Dyer, Indiana took a direct hit from the storm. High winds uprooted a massive tree causing it to come crashing down on the roof.

Think Winter is over? Think again!

Just when we thought we were done with winter, Mother Nature says.. not so fast!
Guess, we hearty Chicagoans should be used to this. (I remember covering a couple of April snowstorms. That was no fun.)

The weather is one reason why Forbes Magazine recently named Chicago one of the most miserable cities to live. That crossed my mind as I'm grumbled while driving to work in the storm at four in the morning.

Still, thirty thousand runners will show Sunday morning for the Shamrock Shuffle which is the official kick-off to our running season.
Plus, didn't the U.S. Census just report the Chicago-area population is growing? Obviously, people still want to live here no matter how miserable the weather may be.

You know what they say-- if you don't like the weather in Chicago, wait five minutes. It will change.

School Today: Is it worth it?

With temperatures down to seven degrees below zero and wind chills around 30 degrees below zero almost all school districts have cancelled school for the day except for the Chicago Public Schools and a few suburban schools.
CPS schools rarely close down for any weather related incidents. Is this a good thing or a bad thing?
With these sub zero temperatures it is dangerous for students to be in the cold waiting at bus stops or walking to nearby schools. However, if school is cancelled some parents have nowhere to bring their children for the day.
So are the CPS and the few suburban schools doing a responsible thing today by having school because they are helping out the parents or are they doing an irresponsible thing by not being cautious about the health of their students? What do you think? Let us know by leaving a comment below.

Update:
A viewer requested we post the statement from CPS concerning yesterday's cold weather.

Chicago, Say Hello to Tropical Depression Ike

Residents on the city’s northwest side, in parts of Des Plaines, and Midlothian woke up early this morning to find their streets and basements filled with water.
Yikes.
The National Weather Service says at least 6.63 inches of rain fell at O’Hare International Airport yesterday.
We also say the rainiest day in Chicago ever. Wow.
And for the first time in six years the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District opened the sluice gates and locks near Navy Pier to flush storm water and sewage from the Chicago River into Lake Michigan (fyi, I had no clue the city had the ability to do that – its so cool).
