Mayor Richard Daley appointed Cook County Commissioner Roberto Maldonado to be the next 26th ward alderman, Monday.
After 15 years as a Cook County Commissioner, Roberto Maldonado will become alderman of Chicago's 26th ward. The ward has a large Latino population and includes Humboldt Park.
Maldonado replaces Billy Ocasio, who left the post to work in Governor Quinn's administration.
Ocasio wanted his wife, Veronica, to replace him. Veronica Ocasio is an aide to Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-Illinois). She was one of several candidates who interviewed with Mayor Daley, but Daley says Maldonado is the best person for the job.
Ocasio originally recommended Rev. Wilfredo de Jesus, but some gay activists labeled the pastor homophobic. He withdrew from consideration after it was revealed he has not lived in the ward for the required one year.
A group of democratic committeemen will decide who will replace Maldonado on the Cook County Board of Commissioners.
