Enraged Tenant Accused of Beating, Choking, Burning Landlord to Death

Prosecutors described an unimaginable scene on Friday afternoon on Talman Avenue in the Gage Park neighborhood. That's where the body of 67-year-old William Hallin was found dead and burned. His body was found in the basement of one of he buildings he owned on the city's southwest side. Twenty-eight year-old Martin Vega is charged with first degree murder. What comes next shocked everyone in the courtroom Sunday. Prosecutors say Hallin went to the building to collect the rent and spotted a dog in Vega's apartment. He then told him he had to move. I guess Vega allegedly went off. They claim he beat his landlord to death. They claim Hallin was beat with garden tools, a pipe, and a lamp. He was apparently choked with the cord and had a shirt shoved down his mouth while he was begging for his life. Attorneys say Vega then tossed his body on a rug, put gas on it, and tried to light it on fire. What possesses a person to allegedly go off like this? What in the world went wrong? He's being held without bail and apparently was on parole for a drug charge. He has five felony convictions, including unlawful use of a weapon. When these accusations were read during the bond hearing, the crowd gasped and snickered in disbelief. Another absolutely violent crime in a town looking for any sort of peace.
