Dirty Beach Water

You might want to think twice before you go for a dip at the beach.

The National Resources Defense Council is out with a report called "Testing The Waters: A Guide to Water Quality at Vacation Beaches." It examines the water quality at two-hundred beaches. It says the water at Great Lakes beaches is among the dirtiest in the country. The dirtiest beach water in Cook County is at Winnetka Elder Park Beach where 33-percent of water samples exceeded government standards for ecoli. In Lake County, 61-percent of samples at North Point Marina North Beach exceeded public safety standards.

To see how the water at your favorite beach measures up, go to the NRDC's website. On the right side, you'll see a list of states.
