Safe Havens From the Summer Heat

The summer sizzler continues for a second day across Chicagoland.

Today the mercury is expected to climb into the mid 90's, combined with the humidity, it could feel more like 100 degrees in some areas.

It's an awful time to be without central air or an air conditioner, but that's the case for many low-income Chicagoans.

Delona Fields lives in West Garfield Park. Fields says her tiny brick home feels like a hot-box these days. She has about five fans going to try and keep her family cool. They do the trick at night, she says, but during the day they just blow hot air. Her young son has asthma so it's important for Fields to keep a close watch on him in this extreme weather.

Fields says she is going to take her children to a cooling center today to help them beat the heat. The Illinois Department of Human Services has opened more than 100 cooling centers across the state to help people stay cool and comfortable during these scorching hot days.

To find a cooling center near you, call (800) 843-6154.
