President Obama reached out followers of Islam this morning with a much-anticipated speech in Cairo, Egypt.
The president called for a "new beginning between the United States and Muslims."
He said the cycle of suspicion and stereotypes must end.
He quoted from the Quran several times and even referenced his Muslim roots for emphasis. While President Obama is a Christian, his father came from a Kenyan family that includes generations of Muslims. The president also spent some of his youth in Indonesia, which is home to the largest population of Muslims.
The executive director of the Chicago branch of the Council on American Islamic Relations praised the president's speech. Ahmed Rehab said it inspired respect, hope and the set the tone for better elations between the Muslim world and the United States, which is largely a Christian nation.
