Has the Media Been Fair to Michael Jackson?

The Jackson family has been frustrated with much of the media coverage of Michael Jackson's death.

Rev. Al Sharpton, who spoke with the family, says they are concerned that too much attention has been focused on the pop star's problems. They want him to be remembered for his musical legacy.

The truth is Michael Jackson's legacy is a complicated one. Jackson's music was groundbreaking and brilliant. In recent years, however, the music has been overshadowed by the bizarre behavior, the disturbing physical transformation, and the child molestation allegations.

In painting a complete picture of Michael Jackson, can the media completely separate his music from his controversy?

Reporters would not be doing their jobs if they knowingly omitted negative details. At the same time, fans have lost a beloved icon. For many fans, It is hard to repeatedly hear about Jackson's obvious flaws.

This is a 1995 video of Michael Jackson and Janet Jackson's "Scream." The song blasts the media.

We want to know what you think. Have news outlets been fair to Michael Jackson? When you think about his legacy, do you separate his personal problems from his music? Post your thoughts here.

Enough, enough, enough.

Wow, enough about Michael Jackson already !!!!!
With all due respect, but lets face it, the guy was a child molester and a wierdo..

Why don't we pay more attention to the little 2 year old girl that was tortured and killed by her babysitter?
Why don't we pay more attention to the 9 year old girl that was shot by some stupid gang banger just for the hell of it?

And all the other useless killings of inocent children that go on in Chicago as well as the entire world!

The mayor of Gary, is more worried about MJ's remains than the many other problems in his town.

Why is Jesse Jackson so worried about MJ's affairs? Jesse, pay attention to what goes on in your own back yard.

President Obama, come on, an "MJ Holiday"?

The guy died probably due to overmedication. Why don't we worry as much about all the inocent children that are being murdered?

Enoough!!!!!!!!!!

Cheryl :

I have to agree with Michael Jackson father and others. I think the media has been so unfair to Michael and His entire family. Where is the simpathy for this family? Itn't is so sad that even after this man is gone that the media still focus on his personal life. LET IT GO! JUST LET IT GO! I think the media owes The Jackson family an apology for being so cruel about their love one during this time. They said enough when he was a live. Let his soul R.I.P. I love Michael and always will. My sibling and I grew up with Michael, it felt like he was part of the family. One more thing, I listen to 1390 radio this morning and what I was hearing was just so unbelieveable, They were commenting on the BET award and a caller call in and said it was the worst. What that caller fell to realize was the show first of all was changed because of the death of Michael and that's what everyone should have focus their attention own, not own what Beyonce had on, what Jamie Foxx did or didn't do. It just so sad that we live in a world that some people have no consideration for other people in their time of sorrow. May God keep the entire Jackson family close and give them comfort.God Bless!

Kimberly Clark:

For the most of it, No !!! I don't think that the media has been fair to Michael or his family. I personally had to turn away from certain T.V. channels, because of all the negative things they were reporting on Michael. Now don't get me wrong, all media isn't guilty of this negativity. There were a handful that only focused on his music, dancing, etc. Michael has entertained us for decades in the past and will continue to do so, now, and in our future He is and always will be the greatest performer of all time.

I am in agreement with the Jackson family. It is ridiculous how the media has just made a "wacko" circus out of his death. Even after being acquitted, the media has portrayed him as guilty after being proven innocent. They just won't let it go. He should be remembered for his Legacy, as being the King of Pop, the first black entertainer to break the racial barrier around the world. My condolences to the Jackson family. Dr. Mom

Anonymous:

The so called media really is made up of a bunch of publicity seeking prostitues(i won't use the really fitting term).

Stacey Ellis:

I agree with the family. Once the media declares that you are guilty of a crime, it doesn't matter what the courts say. The media will still report on you as if you were guilty. I love MJ- always have, always will. His music was a gift to the world.

Ruth:

There is no doubt that Michael Jackson was a great preformer and loved by many...but I fail to understand if all of so called "friends" including his family members did not step in to help him and allow Michael to get so hooked on the drugs he was supposidly taking, have concern about his weight, not eating etc. Where were his family members during this time...Where were his so called friends? How could they allow this????

Quintella Watkins:

I think the media has been extremely unfair to Michael Jackson and his family. This is suppose to be a time of celebration of a "Great Legend". The media is just cruel! They have been insensitive to his family. It's a time for everything, but right now is not the time to reflect on all of the negative things that he was accused of. When someone passes away regardless of what they may have done or accused of we put that to the side and we celebrate their life. Everyone passes away with things that their not proud of, but we don't reflect on that. Michael Jackson has changed the world! He changed me! He's a living icon that will live forever!

Judy:

No matter what Michael did or didnt do, its not our business. The Media finds people guilty even when the courts do not. I think this man was a soft and kindly soul and the media tormented him. I set and cryed last nite.. my thoughts of this young man in all of his glory and how great he truly was. My heart goes out to his family.. AS for the media.. "LEAVE HIM ALONE" the King is gone and thats all people need to know..

Quiana Horton:

I would have to agree with the last comment,Michael Jackson gave this world inspiration to sing and dance. The media is focusing to much on the negative than the postive. We should be remebering all the good things he did for our world and how he gave us awesome music to dance to. Michael Joesph Jackson should be remember as an postive person not negative, whatever he did or didnt do thats the past.Michael Joesph Jackson gave us alot to cherish in the futrue and making negaive remarks is really pointless. Look what he did for America,he gave us new dance steps. Michael Jackson gave us 13 NO.1 songs byhimself and 4 NO.1 with his brothers as the Jackson5.Fous on the GREAT things Michael Jackson did for America and not the negative,Micahel Joesph Jackson became The King Of Pop in 1989 and Left this world as The Legendary King Of Pop.The music he created and the dance steps, and his soul will live on inside of us forever. I give my synpathy to The Jackson Family and may The King Of Pop look down on us and see what he did for us and all the joy and happiness he brought us Rest In Peace MJ.

Duke Mkrdichian:

I thinks the media and "Michael Jackson Fans" have been extremely unfair to Michael Jackson for far too long. Its not right that people express how much Michael Jackson meant to them and how he inspired billions of people after he died. These are the same people who were "disgusted" with Michael Jackson when he was alive. Everyone was so quick to point the finger on Michael and turn their back on him when he was alive and forgot that he was without a doubt the greatest performer EVER!

renay4you:

I agree regardless of his past he was a lagacy and that what the news should report

Marge:

I happen to agree with the Jackson family. We should be celebrating the life of the music legend. We know him from all his albums, videos and dance steps. This is why we remember him, we don't remember him from his other problems. We are fans who really don't care that much about his personal life. We should concentrate on what he has given us with his music and with his gentle and loving ways. He will live on forever because of his music, nothing else.
