Putting the Brakes on Bad Bus Drivers

If a school bus driver is sometimes spotted in his neighborhood running naked....should he be driving a school bus?

That's the question I kept asking myself today as I interviewed neighbors of 35 year old Ronald Newsome in the 12100 block of South Wallace Avenue.

Newsome was fatally shot by police officers after he hijacked a bus from First Student Bus Company during an argument with one of his managers. He drove it erratically through many of the south suburbs, and crashed into police and civilian cars in the process. He was threatening to run over officers standing in front of his bus when they finally fired.

His neighbors say Newsome was really nice- when he remembered to take his medicines.

When he didn't, there was loud screaming and police visits to his home. One neighbor says he recently bashed his mother's head into the door and forced her from his house- never to return. Another said he sometimes came out of the house for laps around the block without his clothes.

A spokeswoman for First Student Bus Company said Newsome had to pass criminal and other background checks to be employed as a driver....but should the standards be higher??

R.I.P. Ronnie:

I was just stunned when I heard the bad news!!!! I knew Ronnie as a Child hood friend, I lived one block away from him and his brother Reggie! I knew him to be a nice person and he was fun to hang with. Everyone has problems and it is out right disrespectful for people to say bad things about him, especially when one does not even know him personally. My prayers go out to The Newsome Family...R.I.P Ronnie

Some people will say anything when the cameras are rolling. Ronnie was my cousin and he was a good man. He was trying to live his life the right way. Do not judge him because only GOD can do that.

I am a school bus driver and I know our fingerprints are not only state wide but also Federal and are stored with the FBI.If as a driver you are arrested because your fingerprints are in the files the Police Departments would send a notification to the bus company. As for the Drug testing we are randomly tested and I myself was called every other month for 8 months and is chosen by social security number. All busses have erratic driving numbers on the back of the busses for anyone to call with bus number or name of company or license plate any of those 3 ways you can report an erratic driver and those have to be taken care of as soon as a report comes in to the manager. As for asking a driver the name of a company or school you drive for,the names are in Big black letters on both sides of the bus or if you were at the school you could go in and talk to the principal or secretary about the situation instead of putting yourself in harms way. Did you press charges for her assaulting??As for Samaria's comment I know First Students have child checkmates on there busses were you have to walk to the back of the bus to disengage teh system so that it dont go off and on the way to the back and front of the bus is a check for sleeping children or children that did not get off at there stop or school. My final comment is I know that this frustrating for parents but it is just as frustrating for us as Bus drivers. Also just remember that no matter what profession you are in and something goes wrong it does not make every employer and employee bad people. I know from experience there are some exceptional drivers out there that do a wonderful job transporting your PRECIOUS CARGO!!! If your concerned about what drivers do there are bus drivers needed all over the country and anyone is more than welcome to apply (as long as you pass requirements including extensive background checks also random drug testing and annual physical and drug and alcohol test) and come out there and see what it takes to put your back to 70 children of all ages.

Samaria:

I do blame the bus company and the Police!! Ronnie was my brother in law and I have known him for 20 years. I do not appreciate some of these so called neighbors commenting on him when they did not know him. I lived in the house with him and I know Ronald to be kind and caring about all his family members. Everyone at some point in their life gets upset and may displays anger. Do not judge him when you did not know him, do not speak of him if you did not know him! Let me give you an idea of kind of person he was until his life was taken by the police who are supposed to serve and protect: Ronald drove 100 plus miles to come and get my children and myself when my husband left us with no food and shelter. He offered us a place to live in his home and provided food, comfort and love to my children. He was not a bad person in any way shape or form. What was done to him was an injustice and should be investigated...And also I want to also say that We (all of his family including his mom) feel a deep and profound loss. We will always love and miss him

I have no doubt that the Glenview police blew you off and let the bus go on its merry way.

That was my child that was left on the bus in Glenview. I was shocked that the Glenview police allowed the bus driver to driver our son back to school without even an escort! Police at the school then wanted to brush the incident off as an "accident" and did not want to hear from the parents about past erratic behavior. Fortunately, a subsequent investigation that resulted in charges. But real police would taken the driver in custody, administered a drug test and presented complaints for child endangerment on the spot.

There are problems with school buses. Right now there is a bill pending in the Illinois House to require buses to have communications equipment and to suspend the bus co. license if a driver does not do a post route inspection. The bill as originally proposed would have required GPS on buses -- a great idea. The bus company lobby moved to eliminate this requirement since it would cut into bus company profits.

The reality is I doubt bus drivers are paid much. I doubt it is even a full time job or has many benefits. It seems that all that is needed is CDL and no criminal record. This is not sufficient to weed out those who should not be driving buses for mental health reasons etc. The bus companies are obviously not going to pay decent wages and employ only the best since that would cut into their profits.

You guys need to stop it! That was my uncle! He was a very nice man. Everyone says, "As long as he takes his pills" Keara Mack and they say it like it's a joke. No disrespect to Ms. Mack. But everyone has thier days and for you guys to put him out there like some loony is not right. Please know your facts before you talk about things you don't quiet understand because that only makes things worse.

Mike D:

The issue of his wild nakedness may be a legit issue for the bus company on who they hire to drive our children, but the other blearing issue here is did the police really have to kill this man. Was he killed because he ran naked in his yard?

The police on the seen probably did not know much of his mental illness history but they had to have known he was having mental illness issues from his behavior that day, the way he was driving, etc...

My big question is; why would a cop stand in front of the bus, knowing this mans erratic and disturbed behavior. It seams to me the cop/s decided to take him out, and to effect this, by deliberately stepping in front of the bus so that they can say there life’s were in danger, and thus then they had more legal reasoning to drop this troubled man.

Verry sad,,,

If you run a background check and finger prints and nothing shows up, it sounds like one would think this guy was ok. How would everyone think otherwise. Unfortunately because the job he did was driving a school but, this becomes public knowledge. If he was working elsewhere, would we even hear about it on tv? Many people work at different places and are unstable, but it never becomes public knowledge. First Student followed procedures and did everything they could to search for anything in his back ground. It is NOT the bus companies fault. It is unfortunate, but this could happen anywhere, especially now a days with all the stress people have with the economy being so bad! I DONT BLAME THE BUS COMPANY!

Heather Kimura:

Bus Drivers should be screened biannually and drug tested frequently.

I was almost hit by a bus backing up in a school parking lot (against ILL law), I yelled for her to stop and she flipped me off. When the buss had stopped, I walked in front of the bus and the driver lurched the buss AT me.

When I reached the side of the bus I asked what company she was from so I could report the incident she exited the bus yelling at me, wagging he finger in my face. I was moving back away from her and she PUNCHED me in the face. I woke up on the ground. The Glenview Police officer asked if I was OK did not call paramedics spoke with the bus driver. Both a district official and Glenview Police allowed the bus to fill with children and for the bus driver to finish her route.

Both school officials and Police departments must put the safety of the public before another incident occurs.
Two weeks ago a child was forgotten on a bus while the bus driver shopped. Again Glenview police and Niles Police allowed the bus driver to transport the child back to the school. Clearly after she had endangered the child. Do we not have laws to protect children and the public? I could and did speck up. Children cannot.
