A Mother's Day Tradition: Fighting Breast Cancer

More than 30,000 people came out to Grant Park for Mother's Day, walking for breast cancer survivors and those who lost the battle. It was the 18th annual Walk to Empower. They came with their signs and pink-colored shirts, telling these women they don't have to face this alone. Many families say it's a tradition they wouldn't miss for the world. What inspires you about these strong women? Share your stories of courage and inspiration. These walks bring families together and breast cancer survivors are able to find a support system to help them through the tough times. The Breast Cancer Network of Strength is looking to raise $4 million in Chicago, money that could go a long way to helping someone in your family. Like one person said, "This walk could help some family two weeks from now and they don't even know it." The strength of these survivors are shining through brightly on Mother's Day.

Louise Edwards:

Thanks to CLTV for covering the Walk to Empower event on Mother's Day. My mother battled breast cancer for two years and unfortunately did not win her battle. Just recently, a former associate of mine passed away from breast cancer. It's a horrible thing to lose anyone you love, but it's truly a celebration to see people bonding together to support each other during these times.

I always join the McDonald's team each year at the Walk to Power event. Not only does it make me feel closer to my Mom, who missed far too many Mother's Day celebrations, it is an uplifting place for me on that day. Everyone there has a story with plenty of laughs and celebrations of life. I laugh every year when Ronald McDonald sets off the confetti gun and the runners take off and he really has to sprint to get out of the way. And, I love the funny costumes and great posters.

The human race can really do a lot when people bond together and support each other. Kudos to the Breast Cancer Network of Strength (formerly Y-Me) for helping provide needed support for women battling breast cancer...and their families. And thank you to companies like McDonald's who help sponsor such great events and programs.
