Instead of getting U.S. Cellular Field ready for today’s White Sox season opener against the Kansas City Royals, crews were busy on snow detail this morning, shoveling snow and spreading salt. Baseball officials decided to postpone the first game of the 2009 until tomorrow due to this latest blast of wintry weather.
This marks the first time since 1982 that the opener for the White Sox has been postponed because of a snow-out.

While some die-hard Sox fans were very understanding about the cancellation, I spoke to one teen who was not happy that his favorite team wouldn’t be braving the elements today. Antonio Lopez was at the Cell before 8 a.m. He rode his bike to the ballpark – minus a coat and gloves. Lopez says he is use to Chicago weather and Sox players need to suck it up and get use to the weather also. After all, he said, they are making millions of dollars, and if he was making that kind of cash - he would play baseball - no matter the weather.
Maybe baseball officials could solve this weather problem by just moving opening day for the Sox to say May. But, then again, this is Chicago and who’s to say we won’t see flakes for Mother’s Day.
