Members of Chicago’s Police Union don’t have a problem with Chicago hosting the 2016 summer games. In fact, they hope the city lands the Olympics, which will mean more work and overtime for officers. But they are using today’s visit by International Olympic Committee officials to bring attention to some simmering issues.
Officers are angry that Mayor Daley pulled a 16 percent pay increase off the negotiating table. They also have issues with the city’s top cop, Jody Weis, and recently gave him a vote of “no confidence.”
Weis has held the job for more than a year. The former FBI agent has a three-year contract for $310,000 a year.
This much is sure, by 2016, the police pay dispute will long be history. And Weis surely will be part of the Chicago Police Department's history, as well. The question is, how soon will that history begin?
