Last year, there were more than 3,000 pedestrian related accidents on Chicago streets. This week, Chicago Police will start cracking down on drivers who fail to give pedestrians the right of way.
Get caught and be prepared to pay up.
The undercover officers posing as pedestrians will be at numerous intersections around the city pulling over and ticketing drivers who barrel past pedestrians trying to cross the street. Most if not all of the intersections don't have stop signs or traffic signals.
Drivers who get caught face hefty fines ranging from $50 to $500.
There's also a new law pending before the Illinois Senate that would require drivers to not only yield but stop when pedestrians are in crosswalks.
Violators of the proposed law could face a minimum fine of 150 dollars.
What's your take on what the city is doing? Is it fair to drivers or a sneaky way for the city to make a quick buck? Let me know what you think.
