Agents from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency executed a federal search warrant on the village of Crestwood, Wednesday.
Agents were seen carrying out several boxes of records and documents from Crestwood's Public Works building. They are looking for any evidence that would suggest village officials committed environmental crimes.
Earlier this month, a Chicago Tribune investigation revealed the south suburb knowingly pumped contaminated well water into Crestwood's water supply for more than 20 years. Some residents are worried the tainted water caused cancer and other serious health problems.
Crestwood Mayor Robert Stranczek says the village is fully cooperating with the federal investigation. The EPA will not comment on what documents were seized during the raid.
