When a School is More Than a School

Our school is more than a learning institution, it is the fabric of our community.
That's what parent Willie J. R. Fleming said Schiller Elementary School means to his family.

Willie's comment touched me and made me think about my own elementary school.

Today the Chicago Board of Education is expected to vote on a plan to close, consolidate or phase out 16 Chicago schools, as part of a five-year plan to address declining enrollment. Schiller Elementary is slated to be closed.

Tuesday night, Willie and about two dozen other parents, students and community activists put on their parkas and long johns and camped outside of C.P.S headquarters to try and save their schools.

They say the C.P.S. plan is flawed and will hurt their families and their communities.

Willie says his daughters desperately need this school, and he's not going to see it close without a fight, even if that means taking this matter to court. I admire Willie's tenacity and wish I would have joined the fight to save my elementary school. What would you do to try and save your school? Drop me a line.
