The Big Hair and Make-up may be gone (I.E. one-time Cicero Town President Betty Loren Maltese is still in a federal slammer), but the crazy political ways of the town infamous gangster Al Capone helped infamously put on the map are.. well... still crazy?!
Just get a load of how the UGLY three-way race for Town President has unfolded, leading up to election day (2-24-09). My CLTV colleague Aaron Baskerville got quite an earful from the candidates (check out his story posted here).
Not only did the two challengers of incumbent President Larry Dominick have to go to court to get themselves back on the ballot after the local election board kicked them off (for respectively being a police officer and college trustee??!!), but they've -all- been flingin' and slingin' the campaign mud!
BEST LINE YET
After one of his challengers accused incumbent Dominick of over-doing it with the patronage hiring (as in giving town jobs to his allegedly un-qualified relatives),
--Dominick's response:
"Mayor Daley always said if you can't help your own family, who can you help?"
Oh yeah, Cicero, Illinois --a Chicago-Wannabe!
