The unemployment rate in the United States soared to 7.2 percent in December as employers slashed 524,000 jobs.
Economists say more bad news could be ahead.

Continued job losses are the most visible sign of the nation's struggling economy. In 2008, employers cut 2.6 million jobs. Employers are not only cutting jobs, they're cutting back on hours for their remaining employees, too.
The steepest losses were in manufacturing, construction, temp services and retail. Health care and government were the only industries that created jobs.
