« Tears for Mya | Main | Should CPD buy SUVs? »

Is it politics or practical purpose?

Chicago Police Superintendent Jody Weis responded to the Governor's offer to bring in State Police officers to help curb violence in the city today.

Though he said he's willing to take on more officers to assist in targeting higher crime areas, he added he's not sure why he and Mayor Daley weren't asked about the plan before an announcement was made at a press conference yesterday.

The mayor yesterday and Weis today truly seemed to be blindsided by the offer.

What's the true motivation behind it?

Perhaps it'll become more clear in the next few days.

As a taxpayer, it worries me that our leaders don't seem to be working together to solve this serious issue.

What do you think?

We'll be following reaction, including yours. Tune into Garrard McClendon Live tonight, he'll be taking your calls and asking for your opinion.

I understand that the city (and State for that matter)is in a uproar over the violence issue that the city is currently experiencing. But this could be avoided in a number of different manners. First and foremost we must find ways to give people alternatives to violence. At times when people don't have much to do (such as work for adults; and outreach programs for teens and youth) they feel as if though there is nothing for them to do. Alot of times this leads to the violence we sometimes see. Another way to curve this violence was recently promoted and sought after by the Austin Community Education Network. This coalition of students, educators and community organizations banded together in an effort to allow a State of The Art High School to be built in the Austin community. The funding was not a problem because the funds had (and are) secure. The problem was and is the city would rather a new warehouse then a school. It really all boils down to the fact that the site that the A.C.E.N choose to build a school was also the site that Alderman Ed Smith had promised to a big time developer who's head quarters isn't even the city limits. Ed Smith said he was for the people but it seems to be obvious that he's not! You want to help stop the violence then first give the youth a chance to grow and prosper! This can be achieved in the Austin community simply by allow the Austin Community Education Network to build the State of The Art High School that they are looking to build. CPS has already stated that they would allow this to happen if the site could be secured. Help stop the violence by first stopping the city of Chicago from building another unnecessary warehouse that will benefit no one but the developers and the city. Oh, by the way, did I mention that the city has promised to give this developer (ML Realty) $10.6 million dollars in our TIF money (Tax Increment Funds) to this developer to build this warehouse!! Who's benefiting from this deal? Surely not the very same people that are so often the victims and/or perpetrators of the violence that is acuiring in this city!! Come on Chicago, let's wake up and stop the madness. Let's wake up and begin to build a future for the city, but more importantly, for our YOUTH!!!
