D.C. gun ban struck down -- Chicago impact?

Form chicagotribune.com:

An angry Mayor Richard Daley on Thursday called the Supreme Court's overturning of the Washington D.C. gun ban "a very frightening decision" and vowed to fight vigorously any challenges to Chicago's ban.

The mayor, speaking at a Navy Pier event, said he was sure mayors nationwide, who carry the burden of keeping cities safe, will be outraged by the decision.

Chicago's handgun ban, which has lasted for more than a quarter-century, came under threat earlier in the day when the Supreme Court decided that Washington D.C.'s law against handgun ownership is unconstitutional.

In a 5-4 decision, the high court determined that Americans have the right to own guns for self-defense as well as hunting. The decision, which had been expected, is a win for gun-rights advocates and provides a better definition of the rights of Americans to own firearms.

Illinois gun-rights activists have said they expect to mount a quick legal challenge to the Chicago Weapons Ordinance.

M. Hearn:

Chicago's had a quarter century of gun laws -- ineffective gun laws because only the law-abiding citizens obey them. Mayor Daley claims we should "go back to the Wild Wild West ideals and take our battles to the street". That's where the battles are today with 70 shootings in Chicago since Memorial Day. When laws are selectively enforced and Chicago provides a "Sanctuary City" to lawbreakers, then it can't expect anything other than the violence that it promotes. When laws are not enforced equally, then the citizens will choose which laws they wish to obey. The Fr. Plegers and Rev. Wrights of the town promote lawbreaking and illegal immigration and sanctuary cities while taking away the rights of free speech and rights of law-abiding citizens. Chicago is reaping what it has sown -- gang warfare, corruption, law-breaking and murder and the City of Chicago and Cook County are Complicit in the crimes. The Mayor and the Council and the Cook County Officials all belong in jail and should be charged with Constitutional and Federal Violations and discrimination.

Robert:

I totally agree with the high court decision, The Second Amendment is very clear,

A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed"

-- Second Amendment to the Constitution of the United States of America (emphasis added for those legislators and judges that have trouble with plain black and white text.

matt:

Its typical and expected that the rich elitists will seek to restrict rights, while the working class citizens celebrate the decision by the supreme court.

narvell:

I think the high court was great in its decision, because people commit crime, and if not guns it will be something else. Gun should have never been made, but now it is to late. The bad man will never give up his guns, but he would like if no other persons but him to have a gun, so he can go in and out your house or business at will, not have to worry about any resistance. The law can not be every where, we all know that. Don't take away our rights to protect ourself. Guns is here so we have to deal with them. When people commit crime with guns or other weapon put them in jail and stop letting them out again. they will realize the message that is being send.
