Deadly Lessons: Where do we go from here?

This week on Deadly Lessons, we talked about parenting, guns, and gangs. We heard the students speak out, and we discussed solutions.

We opened the dialogue on the violence that's gripping Chicago's young people, but we barely scratched the surface. The truth is the issues are complicated, and there is no easy answer.

So, where do we go from here?

I think each and every one of us has to find a way to make an impact. 23 Chicago Public Schools students killed is 23 too many.

Parents you need to know what you kids are doing?

JHS:

Concealed weapon laws are not goint to help what's going on in Chicago. These are 12-19 year old getiing killed out here. Or are you saying they should be allowed to carry a concealed weapons for protection. It's also hard to protect yourself when you are SHOT by someone driving by as you stand wating for a bus, sitting on a bus, sitting in a car or just walking down the street. The gov. needs to crack down on these gangs. STOP WORRYING ABOUT Terroist from Iraq and Afganistan, give as much here with the gangs. We'd need 9-10 Sept. 11'ths every year to kill as many Americans that are killed by Handguns yearly. Something will change as these fools keep shooting up the Universities. 4 schools closed several days last week in Chicago because of threats. People R just *$&* nuts in this country......

This is fantastic!! I love how he put that together!!
&& I think its great that a 15yr old, would come on here and let people know what he is thinking!
we need more youth, to really let us know what is going on,
I believe the school sercurity guards know, whats going to go down, because they come from the streets as well, and i believe they can prevent a lot of the school shootings.
it is our job to listen to our youth!!

I am 23, && i have worked with youth for the passed 7 years as a youth counselor,&& outreach coordinator

LISTEN TO OUR YOUTH!! PAY ATTENTION!! ADVICE THEM!!

I have seen gangs, drugs, guns, teen pregnancy, and even police brutality destroyed the communities. I have lived in the western suburbs since 2001, and what I have done since that time is study white people. I've watch them interact with their children, how they handle problems in their nationhood, and how they take care of their property. What the inner city neiborhoods needs is . I grew up on the southeast side of Chicago during a home ownership association to find out how to handle these problem. 1. whoever owns a car needs a parking permit, after 9.00pm to 7am they receive a parking ticket; so they know who belongs. 2. call the police for any strange activity. 3. organize block parties so everyone knows who are there neibors. 4. Get to know the cops that petrol the area. 5. Limit the amount of renters. 6. Fined those who don't keep their lawns clean. 7. Elect a president to the association. For the parents; hug your children everyday tell, them you love them, when you discipline let them know why, keep your kids busy with sports or anything positive, talk to your children, and fined out what is going on in their life. Black parents join the PTA so you can have a say so in what goes on with your children’s education. Young parents, be a parent, stop trying to be a friend. Stop making excuses, start finding solutions.

Antonio:

I am only 15 years old and I strongly believe that taking guns away from law abiding citizens isn't a good thing to do. As you can see there have been 23 CPS students killed this year. Crime isn't going down. I believe that in Illinois we need a concealed carry law. Fact is that in a state where people are allowed to carry concealed, the crime rate is low. Disarming law abiding citizens isn't the answer. Also GUNS DONT KILL PEOPLE, PEOPLE KILL PEOPLE. If you believe guns kill people then pencils make mistakes, spoons make people fat, and alcohol makes people drive drunk. A gun is only a tool and the person behind the trigger is the brain of the gun. I think that everyone would prefer to live in a world without guns but we cannot go back into history to stop the invention of firearms. So banning guns will not help becuase there will still be guns anyways. Why can't a parent carry a handgun to defend their children!?

Itzel:

I think that all teenagers involved in gangs should get psychological attention what they need is attention they need to express what they feel inside and since their parents are never home they don't have anyone to talk too.
I have friends that are involve in gangs and i see how they act. They are always talking about themselves, how they dress or the new Jordan's that their wearing its ridiculous. There's an example that i can give you we rockers (punks, emos, metalheads, goths) this groups are all against the society and specially the government.
And we dont play around. The gang members are just trying to get attention and that's why they get me mad
their trying to look cool in front of people that don't even care what they do all they care about is their safety that's why people want to STOP this !!!!

AS A STUDENT N AS A CHILD I THINK THAT MANY PARENTS NEED TO SHOW THEIR CHILDREN LOVE TO LET THEM TO KNOW THAT THERE ALWAYS SOMEBODY RIGHT THERE BY THEIR SIDE....SO MANY STUDENTS WOULDN'T HAVE TO SEEK OUT LOVE FROM GANGS...ALSO THEY NED TO GET THESE GUNS OFF THE STREET BECAUSE ITS HARD TO LISTEN TO KIDS DIE

Anonymous:

SHAMEFUL how the media is just as guilty as our political leaders at playing with the lives of our kids that are dying. I am not moved at al by this series.

Tired of Father Pleger and Jesse Jackson:

My questions for Father Pleger and Jesse Jackson. Since criminals who use guns don't obtain their guns legally and don't follow the laws what good will it do to pass more gun control laws which only affect law abdiding citizens?
Why bring all these inner city school children down to Springfield to try and pass gun control laws that don't work? The problem is these people don't apply blame to where it really belongs! It's a people control problem not a gun control problem. Many inner city children are raised improperly by their parents. It really comes down to poor upbringing and lack of moral values that causes children to become killers. People really shouldn't have children if they can't afford to raise them properly. It's a concept called strict liablity which is never mentioned by the media or clergy. Black people are the only ones who can solve the problems in their own community. White people or the federal government can't help them. They have to take responsiblity for their own neighborhoods. It's kind of like the situation in Iraq we can never force peace upon anyone they have to do it for themselves.

Self defense should legal in Chicago!:

It's obvious that gun laws won't stop murders in Chicago!!!! Handguns are already illegal in Chicago!!!! Chicago is a a victim disarmnent zone!!!!
The cemetaries are full of dead victims who couldn't legally carry a handgun forself defense in Chicago!!!! Mayor Daley is protected by armed guards with guns while the law abdiing citizens are left defenseless by the mayor's anti constitutional laws.
In Chicago numerous women are dead because they couldn't legally own a gun just read this story about Ronyale White.

In the great state of Indiana where law abding citizens can legally carry a handgun this woman was able to defend her life from an attacker

WE NEED A CONCEALED CARRY LAW IN ILLINOIS SO THE LAFUL CITIZENS CAN DEFEND THEMSELVES AGAINST ALL THE CRIMINALS WHO CARRY GUNS ILLEGALLY!!!!

linda holland:

hi my name is linda holland and my comments is that i think you all need to get all the founders of gangs and have a nation wide meeting on telvision with all the gang cheifs thats in jail where they can reach out to all the gang ledders thats on the street to bring all deadly gun crimes truff wars gang banging and dope dealing to a end because it,s to many young childrens dyeing from bullets thats not even ment for them. thank you:

We can sit around and discuss solutions until we turn blue in the face. Some may say it is the responsibility of the police agencies to correct our problems, which is ridiculous. Some may say it is the U.S. government's responsibility to solve our problems. Some may even say it all starts at home, which is true. But when a parent/parents cannot watch what their children do 24 hours a day, that is when the video and music becomes instructmental in corrupting our young children. That is the start of our misery. Foks, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to understand that as long as the profanity, violence, sex and drugs continue to be heard and seen by our young children, we should expect exactly what we have been receiving, little monsters who care nothing about society because that is exactly what they were taught via the diplorably bad videos and music that they constantly isten to and watch. Let's examine this. Prior to the introduction of these graphic videos and the type of music Power 92 and other radio stations play continuously, most music had positive messages. You did not hear music that tells you how bad you need to have sex. You did not hear music explaining the size of your genitals. You did not hear music that tells you how to "shoot a nigga." You did not hear music that was made by black people that talks about black people with no regard for the culture. You did not see graphic videos that even grown people should not even be allowed to watch. You did not see the amount of violence on television that is available today. Video games with the graphic killings today play a significant role in our dysfuntional society. So why are we surprised? Until we as a people challenge these rich so-called music artists about the so-called garbage music and videos they are poisoning out young children with, we should expect no change. And we will not see any change. TRUST ME! We are fighting a mental war that must be attacked at the source. THE MUSIC AND VIDEO INDUSTRY MUST BE ADDRESSED FOLKS.

police officer:

Im a police officer. Spend more time with your children, so I dont have to. Thats all I got to say

M P McAuley:

I live out in the western suburbs...very little gang acitivity, actually next to none. I've been a substitute in K-8 and I have seen a few wild kids but NOTHING at all what I see on CLTV. The various principals have ORDER in their schools.

What I suggest for the inner city schools will entail a RADICAL CHANGE in punishment in the Gang Infested neighborhoods. Might require some US Constituitional changes.

Ready ??

When a kid is convicted of some offense...might be gun related or not...ONCE HE IS CONVICTED HE IS NOT, REPEAT NOT SENT OFF TO PRISON. He is brought back to the neighborhood where he has done the evil deed and then he is either:

Hung with a rope in front of the community OR

OR for lesser offenses he is

CHAINED/SHACKLED TO A POLE FOR 10-20 YEARS in full view of the public and the rest of the gangs. He must stay outside during WINTER and shiver.

Let's try it for a while !! Can't be any worse than what's happening.

Kim:

responding to the first 2 comments posted here: You cannot even put a sentence together. This is what we are up aginst here. You are bragging about all this too. It is not the responsibiliy of the city hall to spend more money to give these kids something to do , that is the familys responsibility. Also, it is your responsibility to get a education and to find a job. And STOP blaming the Police for abuse. You cannot even walk in your own neighborhood and you are going to complain about the police ! THIS is part of the problem...you blame everyone but yourselves. Don't you get enough free stuff from the government ? Stop asking the city and the big governments for things you are suppose to provide for yourselves ,your families and for your neighborhoods. You obviously don't have anything to do in the neighborhood because no businesses can stay open because you act like animals by robbing, ripping off and shooting other human beings. We need guns to protect ourselves from people like this...if you had a gun carry law these animals would think twice before robbing you or shooting you or commiting a crime against you at all. It is the bullie mentallity. They think they can do anything to you because you have NO way to defend yourself. Arizona has 100,000.00 conceal carry permits and we have little problems and do not have the crime you have in Illinois. STOP WHINING AND BEGGING.

Kim:

Changing the gun laws is not going to change things in these neighborhoods. We do not live like this in my neighborhood . You cannot penalize honest law abiding citizens because of these law breakers. Put them in jail where they belong and stop letting them out . You keep blaming it on others and it really is about personal accountability. I should have the right to defend myself and my family ANYWHERE we go from animals like these gang members. Just start removing them from society if you cannot walkmin your own neighborhoods......If you don't have anything to do in your neighborhood who's fault is that??? You all keep blaming it on everyone else but yourselves and your familys. Start with 2 parents for starters. sorry to sound so mean but get with it, I am sick of hearing you all complain about the same thing year after year and day after day . act like human beings and not animals. GRRRRRRRR

glenn:

if your kid is at least 14-18 and they are in a gang there is little help you can give them real talk.the shooter in Chicago are real shooter they will kill you.i know a couple of kids that will try to get you killed. i know kid that is 12 years old in he steal cars.at least every body i know got a 1 gun or 6.its a lot to this story's

jay:

We need to demand that city hall spend more money on giving our youth something to do and slao helping the youth find jobs or learn more jobs skill ,Ill spend more money on prison , then we have more un-reported police abuse on our youth then ever and gangs pressuring the kids ,and so they go throught so much in their life to they just give up on tring to make good use with their lives ...
