I've been running more recently now that the weather is good. Unfortunately, the running has led to severe back pain! Recently, I was at the Illinois Back Institute shooting Living Healthy Chicago with Dr. Jeff. He noticed my pain every time I bent down to pick something up. I told him that running two straight days had made it difficult to STAND, let alone walk or run. Dr. Jeff gave me a couple of tips that I now use in my everyday life.
1. I always sit at the computer with great posture. I don't slouch anymore!
2. I never sit at the computer or at my desk for longer than 30 minutes without getting up to walk around. The longer you sit, the longer you must walk around to loosen up the back.
3. When I bend to pick something up, I bend my knees and reach to pick up what I need. I DO NOT bend my back. Keep your back straight and bend your knees.
4. After I run, I stretch out my back with various exercises on the floor. Stretching is so important!
5. When getting up off your chair, don't bend your back and lean up. Instead, slide your rump to the end of the chair, and push yourself up with your arms and legs. Don't use your back to get up.
