Tips for Avoiding Boredom at the Gym

gym rat.jpg

Getting motivated to go the gym is the first battle, but once you're there you need motivation to help make sure you stay! Here are some of my tricks for staying occupied at the gym. What are yours?

1. Make a killer mix: iPods and MP3 players make it so easy to create playlists for the gym. I have ten to twelve playlists that I rotate on a daily basis so I never get bored. My mixes contain everything from rap songs and dance tracks to slow rock songs. I add up-tempo beats for my tough cardio workouts and slow songs for my stretch routine.

2. Bring magazines: I'm not one to read books at the gym, but I do like scanning through magazines when I'm performing low-impact exercises on the elliptical machine or stair master. Besides helping pass the time, the models and pictures in beauty, fashion and fitness magazines provide inspiration and extra motivation to keep moving!

3. Dress the part: Plenty of people show up at the gym wearing old t-shirts and shorts, but I like workout-wear that looks and feels good. These days, lots of fitness companies make apparel that's fashionable and functional (Dri-FIT, anyone?). That means you'll look cute working out and won't sweat as much or experience chafing.

My tip - workout with a buddy!
When I go to the gym with my husband or a friend I get a little competitive. I definitely tend to work harder than I would if I was surrounded by strangers.
