How Fit is Chicago?

CHITOWN.jpgA new report was released this week outlining America's fittest cities. Washington D.C. came in first. How do you think Chicago ranked?

Getting motivated to go the gym is the first battle, but once you're there you need motivation to help make sure you stay! Here are some of my tricks for staying occupied at the gym. What are yours?

1. Make a killer mix: iPods and MP3 players make it so easy to create playlists for the gym. I have ten to twelve playlists that I rotate on a daily basis so I never get bored. My mixes contain everything from rap songs and dance tracks to slow rock songs. I add up-tempo beats for my tough cardio workouts and slow songs for my stretch routine.

With my recent trip to South Beach, I noticed something very interesting: the locals studs and studettes who live in SoBe, DON'T GET TANNED! What's this all about? One would assume that given the ability to lay by the beach everyday, everyone would be a bronze god or goddess. Not the case in Miami!

I understand that many of the "beautiful people" who live on South Beach are in the modeling industry and stay away from the sun. I also realized that when it's 80 and sunny everyday, there isn't this feeling of "better get it now because it won't be around very long." Honestly, I got a little too tanned and felt rather ridiculous...almost George Hamilton-ish! From now on, it's sunblock 8 or 15 for this Greek god!

At Living Healthy Chicago, some of our favorite segments spotlight inspirational Chicagoans who have changed their lives by losing hundreds of pounds through diet and exercise. If you've transformed your life--or are on the journey now--we want to hear your story. Leave us a comment and tell us why you should appear on the show. And check out Liz Johnson's amazing profile after the jump to see how she used strength and determination to get happy and healthy.

I'm one of the worst when it comes to watching my diet. I can't help it. I love to eat, and I love to eat bad foods! Recently, I went out with my wife and friends to celebrate Cinco De Mayo. The waitress came and asked for our order. I ordered the steak tacos and when she asked if I wanted corn or flour tortillas, I asked my wife which was better for me. Well, Monica laughed in my face!

Summer Tanning Refresher

Chicagoans are starting to spend more and more time outside as Summer nears (the best time in Chicago!!!). But are you ready for summer and the "tan" that comes with it?

Just in case you forgot during the winter freeze, Click here for a quick refresher on "Sun Sense" and ways to keep your skin healthy and looking good.

When's the last time you found yourself thinking, "I just wish I had more time in the day?" Truth is, most of us are super busy juggling our careers, families and commitments and sometimes we get so overwhelmed we forget to slow down and take care of ourselves.

Sound all too familiar? Trust us, you're not alone. We met up with two Chicago-based Jersey Boys cast members to see how they make time to live a healthy life.

I am in Tampa today and presented the Chose to MOVE program sponsored by Merck for the American Heart Association Go Red Ladies Luncheon. I try to give people the information to inspire them to get even 10 minutes of exercise in daily. I have been fortunate to participate in six cities this year spreading the word to live healthy and chose to move. Today's event was wonderful with almost 400 women and 25 men donating their time and energy to the women's event helping people understand that 1 in 3 people will die of cardiovascular disease, that women have different symptoms and presentations than men, and that small changes make big differences. Ali Vincent of Biggest Loser Fame, told her story of challenges, how heart disease effects her family, and gave words of hope and inspiration for people to make changes and dream big. There are no accidents in life. We create our paths and have to believe in ourselves to make the journey. Help educate people to make better choices: fruits, vegetables, moving and being optimistic are key.

Staying Flu-Free at Work

SIKC!!.jpg

These days, everyone is worried sick about catching the H1N1 Flu. But let's face it, despite the death scares and unnerving media reports, life must go on. Instead of slapping on a surgical mask and taking cover in a dark closet at home, get smart about how you go about your day to day activities. Here are some tips for keeping your workspace germ-free so you can avoid getting sick at the office.

Many of us are worried about the H1N1 flu. In fact, there's been a run on surgical masks in some parts of the country. But do those masks really help protect you from the flu? Or should you be using a respirator?
