Let Locals Inspire You

At Living Healthy Chicago, we love success stories. Meet Todd Neal who lost hundreds of pounds the old fashioned way: by exercising more and eating less.

Today at the More/ Fitness marathon Event expo held in New York City, the buzz is alive and active! Dr Pam Peeke, Dr. Vonda Wright and myself attended to the event along with some 5,000+ women. Tomorrow they all descend upon New York's Central Park with another 4,000+. The even closed in March when the capacity of 9,000 women signed up for either the half or full marathon. Setting goals and reaching them is what this event is all about. Women inspiring women. Friends challenging friends to get healthier. Moms and their daughters spending training hours and the ultimate finish together of a marathon. It is amazing what women can do!

A recent study released noted that young women who did not take birth control were able to build more muscle mass than young women on birth control over a ten week period. After reading this study, it occurred to me that a study should be done for women over 40 or if this information may lead to yet another reason that it is more difficult for menopausal women to keep weight off than our younger counterparts. Just a thought....

With the current economic conditions, it's easy to lose your way to daily happiness. I mean, it's easy to be down when your job is at risk, your home is losing value and you're worried about your future.

The team here at Living Healthy Chicago strives to show you ways to live a healthy lifestyle in Chicago, but it's not always about going to the doctor on a regular basis, eating right and working out.

1) Chew gum. (It keeps your mouth busy)

2) Tell your friends so they feel sorry for you and help you stick to it.

For me, dessert isn't a luxury, it's part of my meal every day. But with swimsuit season coming up, I'm thinking it's time to trade in the donuts for something a bit less gut-busting. What's my solution?

If you think your kids are immune to stress, you're wrong.

Studies have shown that kids tend to act up right after recess and lunch-- lashing out because they're stressed, hyper or agitated.

It sure hasn't felt like spring lately in Chicagoland, but that shouldn't stop you from doing some spring-cleaning around the house. Yes, we know, it's a job many of us hate to do. But guess what, there's some real health benefits to doing it.

Equinox Fitness clubs now offer some new style yoga classes that feature a mind consciousness like never before. With four locations in the city, their are times and classes to fit into even the busiest person's schedule. I checked out a few of their newest classes:

Budokon -"Take your yoga practice to the next level with this playful and challenging blend of Martial Arts and Yoga. Fusing vinyasa flow elements with punching, kicking and Brazilian Jujitsu will give you the sweat of a life-time." says Equinox class description. I found it challenging, fun and bit crazy at times with the names of the movements like "gorilla" and "grasshopper". The instructor is excellent and one of the two in the city that teach it. Check out www.cltv.com/livinghealthychicago to see a video of the class featured on the show.

Circular Strength- "A revolutionary method for "health-first" fitness. Ancient practices informed by modern science for joint mobility, circular patterns of Clubbell weighted strength training and transformational Prasara yoga and flexibility sequences" says Equinox class description. I find it reminiscent of the 4 pound short body bars in the early nineties, and love the feel of fluid movements and opposition momentum to define new strength patterns. A Thumbs up for a change of pace with light weights.

Power Nap - "Renew yourself with a mid-day movement enhanced snooze. A variety of movement arts, yoga, & restorative stretch are combined with breath work & meditative music to lure your body into a sweet, concentrated state of relaxation. Wake up re-charged & ready for your day" from the class description. An eased into feeling of yoga with a long, gentle meditation nap at the end. Something for the ADHD in me that may help me focus for the day.

Definitely worth checking out! ommmm!

Alright gals, this goes in the "ya never know who you'll meet in an elevator" category. So, I'm at the Mondrian Hotel in South Beach and I start talking to these two ladies who are in town for a major meeting for the Nestle corp. Somehow, Living Healthy Chicago comes up and now I'm learning about this new product Nestle has launched called Glowelle.

For many of us in our 30's, 40's or 50's, our sport playing days are over. Today, we try and stay active with excercise at the gym and other fun activities (like me, who gets a workout hanging out with my 3-year old niece - I'm not sure she ever stops running around).

Most people do not realize how many calories they consume on a daily basis. Just thinking about it can be mind boggling if you are not a dietician or a known health expert! BUT one the most mindless calorie intake is done by drinking. I'm not just talking alcohol either. High calories can be found not only in pop and juices but recovery drinks as well. Cutting down on these drinks can help you drop weight and keep you body hydrated by replacing them with just plain water. Three-quarters of our body is made up of water. Muscles are 72% water. And well we know how much water covers the earth. Just drink water!

Any task that seems to large to undertake can paralyze someone. All changes must have continuous progress and accountability to become larger... I equate losing over 100 pounds with starting high school. You know that is takes four years. You know there will be challenges and peer pressure but you also know you can do it. If you take this mindset into losing weight you will succeed. Small steps each day lead to the end goal.

My diet and exercise advice:
1) journal, journal, journal (even emailing to yourself works!)

Keep Your Heart Healthy!

Did you know that heart disease is the #3 killer of Americans? And according to cardiologist George Kondos of UIC medical center, prevention is key to steering clear of heart attacks and other cardiac diseases. Check out his informative video below:

It's been a while since I've been in a good workout rhyth,m but that will change in a hurry. Honestly, I've slacked off the last month with my workouts because of my busy schedule for Living Healthy Chicago and ESPN. Last night, I did my final broadcast of this college basketball season and now, I won't have any excuses.
