Losing weight is never easy. The first battle? Recognizing that you need to make a drastic change in order to improve or save your life. Next comes the motivation to get yourself to exercise and alter your eating habits. And, of course, you have to be persistent in your pursuit to improve your body and lifestyle each and every day. The journey is a long and tough one, but many people who succeed in losing hundreds of pounds say the experience is life-changing.

In our "Get Inspired" segments, we like to introduce you to Chicagoans who have dramatically transformed their lives through diet, determination and dedication. Meet Frank...

For those of you who've read my blogs, you know that I usually share my crazy eating habits. I do this to show that you can still enjoy eating, and remain in relatively good shape. If I can do it, ALL of you can!

I hate to admit it, but old age may be catching up to me. I turned 45-yrs-old a few days ago and I feel like my body is starting to break down. Over the last 3 months, my eye sight has gotten significantly worse.

New research studies show that 7 minutes of intense exercise may be enough to help treat and prevent diabetes. You cannot say you don't have time for 7 minutes!

Have you wondered how many calories you are burning during your workouts? Check out http://www.besthealth.com/Health+Calculators/ - enter your age and what you did and balance out your workouts. Following the advice of NYC Housewife Bethenny Frankell, your diet is like a checking account - Know your numbers. Check out amd_frankel.jpg

One of the weirdest squash is that oval yellow one called "Spaghetti Squash". Although I have heard people talk about serving it with red meat sauce from tomatoes images-1.jpg

No matter how many crunches you perform, if your diet doesn't compliment your training program, you will never see those six pack abs. My biggest tip to helping get people a flatter stomach is to look at your diet and train your body the way you move - standing up.

For diet quick tips:

1)Decrease dairy. Dairy can cause inflammation in the body so cheese and milk should be limited. Live active culture yogurts may be included since they help promote good bacteria in your body which will decrease inflammation. If the lack of getting a daily supply of calcium is a concern ( which it should be ) You can still get calcium into your diet by eating dark leafy greens, kale, and fortified products like Orange Juice and Mission Foods Life Balance tortillas.

2) Increase your fiber intake. Fruits and vegetables contain 1-2 grams of fiber-- potatoes with the skins on can contain as many as 6 grams. Make your goal for at least 25-35 grams of fiber daily. Fortified foods can help increase that number-- my favorite is the Carb Balance tortilla from Mission Foods which boasts 21 grams of fiber in the large tortilla.

3) Increase your fluid intake. Start with more water and drink lots of it until your urine is clear. Staying hydrated decreases lower abdominal inflammation.

We all have heard that regular exercise is key to living a healthier, longer life, but the type, duration, frequency and intensity of what that exercise should be, is a little different for everyone. Beginners should understand that getting a physician's clearance before starting an exercise program is a good practice. Another rule of thumb for beginner exercisers is to understand that muscles learn patterning first and then build strength. So for the first six weeks of starting a new exercise program, realize two things:
Multiple sets of the same exercise will not get you necessarily that much stronger than doing just one set.
The biggest changes that occur for the body

The other day, my 9 a.m. appointment at the doctor's office ran 45-minutes late. And when I was finally escorted into the check -up room, I had to wait alone for another 10 minutes. Bored to tears and draped in a compromising gown, I realized that appointments would be so much more efficient if patients came armed with a few tools.

Oh, My Back!!

I know a number of you have seen me at the Illinois Back Institute on Living Healthy Chicago. Since the shows inception, I've been working with Dr. Jeff and Stella get the word out about how they can help those with back problems.

Treating Varicose Veins

Sure, varicose veins can be unsightly, but did you know they can be dangerous if left untreated?

We recently interviewed board-certified internist, Dr. Narendra Garg to learn more about diagnosing and treating varicose veins with a FDA-approved CoolTouch laser procedure.

Just read a great little article on how people are willing to stop smoking for the health of their pets." Twenty-eight percent of pet owners who smoke said in a survey they would try to quit based on knowledge that second-hand smoke could harm their dogs, cats and other pets, the researchers wrote in the journal Tobacco Control. Another 11 percent said they would think about quitting."

While you are it, think about getting your pet outside and exercise together. Pet obesity is rising as fast as people's ~ and you know if your dog is fat you're not getting enough exercise.

Nintendo's Wii Fit is the hottest new way to work out using video gaming technology. But does this interactive game actually help you break a sweat? Andrea and Lou put it to the test to find out!

Here's my list of mistakes to avoid at the gym:

1) Do not skip the doctors appointment if you have never worked out before. Listen to your heart - rather let the doctors do that and make sure you can.

2) Don't keep pushing yourself in the first six weeks. Take it slowly. It takes approximately six weeks for your muscles to understand and respond to movement patterns so allow yourself to build a better body slowly.

3) Don't overlook or neglect an injury. Pain is not normal especially in the joints. See a phyiscal therapist for a screening (most do it for free) or get checked by your doctor.

HEART LOU.jpg

In the near future on Living Healthy Chicago, you'll see a feature on "the heart scan." If this doesn't get your attention, nothing will. Dr. George Kondos who's one of the most respected cardiologists in the world sat down and talked with Living Healthy Chicago recently at the University of Illinois-Chicago hospital.

Cold season is upon us, so it's necessary to take some precautions to stay sneeze-free. Below, some totally natural tips for staying healthy this winter.
