October 2008 Archives

On Tuesday, I spent the afternoon at Asha Salon in the Gold Coast. I know there are a number of salons and spas to choose from, but I highly recommend Asha.

Lou Tries Yoga

Earlier today, I shot a story at Crunch health club for Living Healthy Chicago. I was told the story was about "air gravity yoga," and was intrigued to say the least. At the age of 44, I've thought more and more about taking up yoga or pilates.

Try one of these activities to Live Healthy, Chicago!

Pets and family fitness: why leave fido behind? Playing hide and seek with your pet is fun too. One person stays with the dog

This weekend I had the honor of helping emcee Pumpkins in the Park. This event celebrates fitness, fall and family time! The event is a compilation of races for kids ages 1 to 13 running short distances and adults participating in a culmination 5K. Many of the runners, both young and old, were dressed in Halloween costumes.

With football and basketball starting to overlap, my life is going to get crazier by the day. Along with co- hosting Living Healthy Chicago, I also host five Bears shows on TV in Chicago and do play-by-play for ESPN on their college basketball package. I tell you all of this because I'm sure many of you are just as busy as I am.

If you ran the Chicago Marathon last weekend, it's likely that your body is still in recovery mode. Be sure to check out Living Healthy Chicago this weekend to learn how athletes can benefit from a hot stone massage!

In case you missed it, our co-host Andrea Metcalf was recently profiled in the local newspaper - The Doings-Clarendon Hills.

And look for Jared Fogle and Bernie Salazar on upcoming episodes of Living Healthy Chicago.

WOW! Watching those 45,000 runners participate in the Bank of America Chicago Marathon was such an inspiration. Although, I have never trained for one personally, I have had many clients take and make the challenge.

Well, since my eating binge at the end of last week, I really concentrated on watching what I ate this week. I also worked out three times this week, concentrating on cardio three days and lifting weights for a half hour one day. I've decided to ease up on the weight-lifting because my 44-year-old body is burned out.

If you are overweight and out of shape, you might need some inspiration to take the first step for better health. I got to talk with Bernie Salazar (of Biggest Loser fame) and Jared Fogel (of Subway fame) about their stories of personal weight loss of 130 and 245 respectively.

Think Pink!

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Get screened, donate money to help find a cure, or just take the time to spread awareness.

Today I was lucky enough to find out what the Chicago Bears eat for breakfast... and it's not just egg whites! From the various answers they certainly eat well... Chris Williams eats pancakes, egg whites, orange juice and some fruit. All the rookies that attended the United Way Hometown Huddle at Morton High School in Cicero had about the same answer.

Well, it's been several days since that Cubs game and not only did the Cubbies make me sick, but a cold and too much of a good time put my stomach into a "tizzy." Since Friday morning, I've been sick and haven't been able to keep much IN the stomach. Saturday, I started to feel better and then ate as if it was my "last meal."

Bye-Bye Back Pain

illinoisback.jpg
Whether you're in your 30s or 60s, you've probably experienced back pain at some point in your life. Luckily, surgery isn't the only solution these days.

Ok, after making a pig out of myself the other night, today I'm going to be so much better! Product 19 for breakfast, leftover salmon, brown rice, carrots and pretzels (don't ask! I always need something crunchy when I eat) for lunch.

Yesterday I was at Morraine Valley Community College helping motivate people to get started walking with the American Heart Association's Great Walk 2008. These walks help raise over 3.3 million dollars to help create awareness on how to live a healthier lifestyle and learn to prevent heart disease. Most people agree they have "no time to exercise" and "they really need to get an exercise program started". However, many believe that it just won't happen for them. I want to encourage you to throw the excuses away and just get started. Walking is a great way to "jump on board" for a healthier you! Just get yourself moving by putting "one foot in front of the other!"
Even ten minutes can change your blood work numbers and help you feel better, stronger and vitalized! Come on Chicago, get moving and START WALKING!

I told you that eating right during these baseball days is going to be tough, and it sure is! I was good at lunch, eating about a quarter pound of chicken salad with low fat mayo. I also had some pretzels with the chicken salad. But last night? Oh was I bad! Real bad!!!

On the streets of NYC, I was asking women: "What one spot on your body needs the most work?" Many body parts including "my hips", "my thighs", and "my belly", were lamented but the most common spot was "my arms", followed by," I hate the part that jiggles as I wave!"

So here's the answer! The jiggling part can be divided into a two main muscle groups: triceps and rear deltiods. For each of these areas try one of these exercises. None of these exercises require anything more than just your own body weight and really do work!

In case you missed it, Andrea Metcalf was on NBC's Today show this morning.

Find out how to take your workout indoors as winter nears.

Lou's Diet Diary

I try to keep cheat days to "once" a week, BUT, with BOTH our baseball teams in the playoffs...oh this is going to be impossible!!! Sunday, I "cheated" by indulging in Lou Malnati's pizza! Now, when I eat really bad for you pizza like this, I try to do it for lunch, this way I give my body the whole day to burn it off.

Working Out on a Budget

Joining a gym can be really expensive, but the Chicago Park District is a budget-friendly alternative right here in Chicago.
