The 3rd and final of 2009's Pitchfork Music Festival certainly ended with celebratory bang - compliments of the Flaming Lips!
However, let's do a quick recap. I found yesterday to be the most musically diverse and enjoyable of all. Chicago boys The Killer Whales kicked off the late afternoon with their fast paced mixture of ska and funk. They reminded me the Police's early days... yeah! When the Police were good!

(more after the jump!)
I had to do a little record shopping between bands. Unfortunately, I left empty handed.
Portland, Oregon's The Thermals cranked it up with their brand of pop-punk.

Electro-shoegazers M83 took us back to the late 1980's with dreamy guitar sounds and electronic dance beats. I highly recommend their 2008 album Saturdays = Youth.

The Flaming Lips, the evening headliners, ended the day with their usual tripped-out performances. Dancing frogs, ladies in bunny suits, confetti and balloons everywhere... it was a sight to behold! Band leader Wayne Coyne introduced himself to his audience inside a lifesize plastic ball.

"Write the Night" was suppose to be the Lips' theme for the evening, meaning they would play songs that the ticket buyers picked. They deviated somewhat and played songs from a forthcoming album. Of course they ended the set with their anthemic "Do You Realize," which was the #1 pick (no surprise there!).

Other noteworty performances were played the Walkmen and Grizzly Bear.

Until next summer!
