You don't have to be a Cubs fan to enjoy a day at Wrigley Field. Being from New York, I grew up a devoted Yankees fan...when I cared to watch a game at all. (Football's more my speed...yup, GO BILLS!) Still, having lived in Chicago for a year now, it was high time I got myself to a Cubs game.
We absolutely took the train, parking did not want to be a headache I wanted to deal with or shell out money for! The Red Line happens to stop pretty much right outside the field, all for the price of $2.25. We got there a bit early, so we followed the lead of other Cubs fans...bar hopping. While some places offer up $6 beers, we stumbled across a few where pitchers were only $5! Perfect! Many of them served fun bar food, too for fairly low prices. Perhaps a wiser way to feed your face than at the ballgame...cheaper and more filling!
As for the game, we got $20 seats, which may have been at the very top and back of right field, but still, not a bad place to perch. And, while we may not have been devoted Cubbie fans, it's hard not to get swept up in their spirit. By the end of the game, we were cheering on Chicago, willing them to win. The charm of the historical ballfield, mixed with the buzz of unwavering hope from Chicago fans is a heady combination and one I thoroughly enjoyed. The boys may have lost in the bottom of the ninth, but there was no anger, just the optimism that next time they'd come out on top.
All in all, I spent a total of $40, which included the ticket, beers and chicken fingers before the game. (I threw some cheez-its and lollipops in my bag, so I didn't need to buy snacks during the game!) I must say, not a bad way to spend a summer evening.
