The term “something for everyone” is a little played out, but that’s really what the musical adaptation of Mary Poppins has going for it. On one hand, how could Chicago not enjoy a good-looking, slightly smug, agent of change swooping in with her lessons in hope, ready to help bail out the Banks (family) from their world of doom and gloom. (ahem)
On the other, it’s pretty cool to watch them fly and dance upside down.
The national tour has set up shop in the Cadillac Theater until this summer – bringing with it a stage show that’s a cross between Tim Burton, storybook and good ol’ fashioned Disney. All your favorite songs from the movie are accounted for, and some new ones blended right in fairly seamlessly.
Of course, Mary herself (Ashely Brown – who originated the role) and charming Bert (Gavin Lee – also of the original production) don’t disappoint, but the real key here is the Banks children (Jane is played by Chicago native Abigal Droger in some performances – and sports a pretty convincing English accent). Droger and Christopher Flaim (as Michael) manage to overcome any obnoxiousness you might think would come with these main roles – think those damn Kars for Kids jingles – and wear their sour expressions without being bratty. They aren’t little angles, but they aren’t those little monsters in the checkout line next to you. As characters in just about every seen, that’s a win for the audience.
Also a win, some ticket are as $25.
Maybe now more than ever, we all need that magical nanny. The show will give you a little escape with its fantastic big numbers, and maybe a little optimism with its smaller ones. In any case, it’s the spoonful of sugar we all could use right now.
Mary Poppins runs through July 12 at the Cadillac Palace Theatre. Tickets are available through Broadway In Chicago. For more info, log on to MaryPoppinsTour.com.
Watch the cast perform the musical number 'Supercalifragilisticexpialidoscious.'

I certainly left my night on the rooftops of turn of the century England a little bit higher than I started, a much needed boost. You can't leave without a smile on your face, and who doesn't want to get back in touch with that pure feeling of just being a kid? You couldn't have described it better, and I'm glad I got to be along for the ride! :)
