American Idol Top 13 Recap with Marcus Leshock!

american idol recaps

An unlucky number. A new stage. An embarrasing entrance for the judges. And the music of Michael Jackson. It was the first big night of American Idol (did I mention they have a new stage?). The Top 13 faced off and sang the difficult tunes of M.J.

"Will he come and help the contestants?" my wife asked.

"I think there might be some kind of law against that," I answered.

My best, good, bad, and just plain ugly after the jump!

THE BEST

Allison Iraheta - Give In To Me. Wow, she was 9 when she decided she wanted to audition for American Idol. I'm getting old. I can't believe she's really 16. She has the best, biggest female voice in the competition. She took a song I couldn't remember and made me want to hear it again. She caught herself after making a quip about "cutting herself," which shows she knows the difference between right and wrong. But can she drive? That's the real question.

THE GOOD

Lil' Rounds - The Way You Make Me Feel. She started the night and kicked it off well. She had some rhythm, put some emotion into it, and looked like she had a good time. During her judging, Kara once again made me want to barf (I'm a little under the weather which didn't help). And what's up with the name Lil? What's her real name? Come on.

Scott MacIntyre - Keep The Faith. Scott is the visually impaired contestant on the show, but his impairments stop with sight. Scott has an outstanding voice and an obvious love for life. I was not crazy about this song, but Kara made a good point in saying that it emphasizes his hopeful message. Simon also had a good point, saying Scott should have sang something people recognized. He can get away with it this week, not down the road.

Danny Gokey - P.Y.T. My favorite Michael Jackson song of all time was butchered with a terrible arrangement. I really like Danny Gokey's tone, but tonight was the first night I had doubts about him winning the competition. Paula sounded extra drunk, saying Danny is going straight to the finals. Simon loved it even more. Maybe my pitch pipe isn't in tune.

Megan Joy Corkrey - Rockin Robin. I thought this was her best performance yet, not sure why the judges ripped her apart so bad.. I still can't get over those weird twistin' gyrations. But she totally won me over when she "caw-cawed" at the end of the song. She's a weird bird alright, and I'm officially on board. Caw!

Adam Lambert - Black or White. If they decide to have a Guns N' Roses night, this guy is walking through. I still think he's a little bit too theatrical for me. If you had never seen this guy, and I put a CD of him into your car stereo, you'd probably chuck me out the window. For the 22nd time this season, Kara reminded us that "he hits notes I didn't think existed!" I'm pretty sure she owns the patent on the phrase. And no, Ryan doesn't have a digital camera waiting for him backstage. Get your head out of the gutter people.

Matt Giraud - Human Nature. He went all Justin Timberlake on us. Kara almost jumped up on his piano when it was over. Yow. One of the best performances of the night. This guy is coming out of nowhere, two great performances in a row.

Alexis Grace - Dirty Diana. She's good, but this might be a little too filthy a performance for a wholesome family show like American Idol. I mean, Ryan called us all friends - who's this girl tramping around the stage in front of my little ones? Kara said "she's a naughty girl, and I liked it." Yeah, it was a bit over the top, but she can sing. Good job.

THE BAD

Michael Sarver - You Are Not Alone. Can you imagine Michael Jackson reminiscing with the contestants about sitting in that bathtub with Lisa Marie Presley? If only - that's what I kept thinking about during this performance. I don't get this guy Sarver - he's not good, goes on too many weird runs, but he fits the nice-guy-nextdoor profile. Simon said he right about him not being a very good singer, being very likable, and even made fun of the show's constant reminders about Michael working on an oil rig. Hilarious.

Jorge "Don't Call Me George" Nunez - Never Can Say Goodbye. Of all the Michael Jackson songs ever written/performed, you pick this one? He should have sang "Ben." He sounded great, but what a weird song choice. Randy brought back the "pitch points," so Jorge wins in the backstage pool. In a humorous moment, Jorge said he wasn't going to "sing Bad by Michael Jackson." Simon answered, "you kind of just did."

Anooooooop Desai - Beat It. My second favorite Michael Jackson song of all time was a little bit too dirty for Anoop. I don't think it was as "horrible" as Simon did, but Anoop's way too nice a guy to be singing a hardcore song like this. Kara was upset he didn't show his chops. His chops.

Jasmine "Pajamas" Murray - I'll Be There. Was that a silk nighty she was wearing on stage? She sounded very shrill tonight, almost nasally. When she hit that long note at the end I ended up cringing. All Randy could do was name-drop his work with Mariah Carey covering this song, as in "Hey, Mariah Carey sang this song much better than you. But good try."

Kris "Who The Heck Is This Guy" Allen - Remember The Time. He and his wife have matching aprons. That's awesome. He chose to incorporate an acoustic guitar into "Remember the Time." I'd ask myself why if I could stop asking myself who the heck this guy is. Another forgettable performance, but the John Mayer crowd might draw him some votes. Paula looks like she got bodyslammed by Gold Dust before the show.

THE VERDICT

Two people will be leaving tonight. Considering an extensive Google search still didn't jog my memory, say it with me folks:

Kris Allen.......HE GONE!

I hate to say it because I really want him to stay. But this was just a terrible sound choice. Say it with me folks:

Jorge Nunez......HE GONE!
