The Academy Award nominations were announced this morning and "Benjamin Button's" Taraji P. Henson was among them. Marcus talked with her in December about her role and the possibility of an Oscar.
More Oscar interviews and some MARCUS feedback after the jump!
He also spoke with Wrestler director Darren Aronofsky. Among the topics was why he chose Mickey Rourke for the lead roll. Rourke is nominated for lead actor.
MARCUS THOUGHTS: Hey there folks! Some big surprises (as always) this morning with the Oscar nominations, among them:
- "The Dark Knight" and "WALL-E" snubbed of Best Picture noms. Both of these films have been doing well in critic's circles, more so with WALL-E. Many predicted it could snag a Best Pic nom, but having a category devoted to Animated Films killed its chances.
- Kate Winslett nominated for Best Actress - for "The Reader!" Thank you Academy. The studio tried its best to market her performance in "The Reader" as a "supporting" role. Too bad she's in nearly every frame of the movie! Kate may have had dreams of getting two noms, one for "Revolutionary Road" AND one for "The Reader," but it didn't happen.
- Bruce Springsteen SNUBBED in the Best Original Song category. His song for "The Wrestler" won the Golden Globe. Not so for the Academy, who didn't even nominate the man! Instead, they gave TWO noms to "Slumdog Millionaire," and one to "WALL-E." This is pretty shocking.
- Robert Downey Jr. gets a Best Supporting Actor nom for "Tropic Thunder!" Wow, this was pretty surprising, especially after how critical this movie is of movies in general, especially Oscar. It's too bad he can't win being up against Heath Ledger in "The Dark Knight."
Wow, it's shaping up to be an exciting evening come Oscar time. I'm actually interested seeing what Hugh Jackman can do with the host role. He might take it back to the glory days of popular actors hosting the show, but it could also be a complete disaster. Either way - great television!
