A great summer song is much like a great summer fling – fun and insignificant with a very short shelf life. With Labor Day ( a little too) near, signally the end of summer and the break-up deadline for summer songs, MetromixTV presents its Top 8 of Summer ’08.
1) I Kissed a Girl - Katy Perry
Why we liked it: It’s hard not to like this incredibly infectious song with driving melody and slightly provocative storyline.
Why we’re ending it: Her “Hope my boyfriend don’t mind it” line eliminates any real edge, plus Jill Souble rocked a song in '95 with the same title. Still, we wouldn’t mind it warming up the chilly airwaves of Autumn once in awhile.
2) Low - Flo Rida
Why we loved it: Sure we had a few months before Memorial Day to really get used to the idea of this song’s domination, but it was this summer that the track really exploded. The fast pace let you and your Apple Bottom jeans work it on the dance floor but it’s catchy and sing-along chorus gave you a chance to catch your breath.
Why we’re ending it: We’re not - especially with boots with the fur weather right around the corner.
3) All Summer Long - Kid Rock
Why we liked it: Its familiar riffs and simple – and we mean simple – tune made it easy enough to still sing along even after a few beers in the sun.
Why we’re ending it: It takes a special gift to ruin two classic American rock songs (Skynyrd’s Sweet Home Alabama and Warren Zevon’s Werewolves of London) at one go, but if anyone can do it, it’s Kid.
4) Damaged - Danity Kane
Why we liked it: Like those cute peep-two wedges you bought in May, this song seemed to go with everything this summer – the club, the beach, the house party, the cruise down Lake Shore drive with the windows down.
Why we’re ending it: Like those same shoes, this track started to hurt – all that stuttering. And spelling out words in songs is so 2005.
5) Lolli Lolli (Pop That Body) – Three 6 Mafia
Why we liked it: It was nice to see Three 6 back after their disastrous reality show and those Mortal Kombat-esque synth strikes and Obama shout out nicely blend the past with the present.
Why we’re ending it:We only have room in our hearts for one Lollipop-referencing song at a time, and Lil’ Wayne’s simply can not be beat.
6) Viva La Vida - Coldplay
Why we liked it: It’s sweeping sound and triumphant vibe made this the best soundtrack for any summer road trip.
Why we’re ending it: Chris Martin’s heavy lyrics made our head hurt too much.
7) Disturbia - Rhianna
Why we liked it: What would this list be without the reigning Queen of Summer Soundtracks - three years running. It could be the middle of the day but once her “bum dum dee dum” starts, all you can picture is the skyline lit up on a steamy night.
Why we’re ending it: We were never 100% comfortable with the thinly veiled promotion for Shia Lebeouf’s 2007 film of the same name.
8) American Boy - Estelle (featuring Kanye West)
Why we liked it: This song was a breath of fresh air on summer radio. Spot on production, Estelle’s pleasing vocals and Ye’s laid-back flow made those hot, humid days a little cooler.
Why we’re ending it: We want to see something else from this UK gem.
Now you tell us. What were was your soundtrack to Summer 2008?
