A public ceremony honoring the life of Bernie Mac is scheduled to take place this Saturday, August 16, starting at noon at the 10,000-seat House of Hope, 752 E. 114th St., Chicago.
Also, WCIU will pay tribute to the comedian on Saturday with an "evening long on-air tribute" starting at 5 p.m.
"A Tribute to Bernie Mac. The special will feature exclusive Bernie Mac interviews from Bernie’s appearances on Chicago Public School’s Sports Edition, behind the scenes video, and tributes from local comedians and on-air personalities." For more, visit WCIU.
Below is video of an in depth interview WGN's Dean Richards did with Bernie Mac last year where he talks about his love for Chicago. He even discusses being a Sox fan around the 12-minute mark.
Also, CLTV's Steve Irvin profiled Bernie Mac in 1995 as he was just becoming a big star in Chicago.
Chicago Tribune writer David McGrath offers this tribute as well. He was Mac's English teacher at Chicago Vocational High School.

Bernie will truly be missed.As many of us Chicagoans never had the pleasure of meeting this remarkable man, he has touched our lives in some way or another.My family and I would get together and watch back to back episodes of The Bernie Mac show and laugh at the truths being expressed by Mac that every black household experiences one time or another.When it was announced that he had passed on, tears fell from my eyes because even though I never knew him,as a fan I knew his heart.Bernie has earned so much respect just by staying grounded and staying true to himself.Rest in Peace, my brother Bernie Mac.I will never forget you.

Hi i am David of Arizona. Bernie Mac is and will always be my idol. He made me fell better every day when i watched The Bernie Mac Show. When i had bad days he made it better for all of us. That is only some of what i am going to say. Mostly i want to say to his family you guys were blessed to have a person like him in your family and sorry he was so young to have passed on. Thank you for shearing him to the world. God bless you Mac family. I am going to miss him a lot thanks Bernie Mac for every thing. Much love to you my friend.

Look to the hill which cometh your help, for all your help comes from the Lord who made heaven and earth. BM was an awesome man and an awesome comedian. We will miss Mr. Mac, but he will always live on in his film and television. My heart goes out to his family, stay strong and remember God is always with you and your family.

HOW CAN I FORGET THE FIRST TIME WE MET IT TOO WAS AT THE COTTON CLUB. THOSE WERE THE DAYS! I CAN'T BELIEVE YOU ARE GONE. I know that Bernie's friends might think that his fans are just that fans, but their are people who feel that he was more; Bernie was the escape ladder to their daily life's. With his priceless Humor set me on a course of HA HA's for the week even the month. But there is one thing that I would like to say from my heart and if this message could reach his family I would appreciate it. YOU ARE NOT ALONE!!! On the very dad of his death, so was my cousin. You are not alone because the pain can not be rubbed away nor can it be slept or drank away, It is a pain that must be walked through in what is left in our daily walk as we remain here on this earth. You are not alone in your pain and grief; nor will you be alone when the time comes when you smile and laugh out loud again; You will be ok and remember you are not alone. I too shall remember you all in my prayers even after the smile returns to your face's.

Bernie mac will be missed but also will be in our heart til this day i still can't beleave he gone i;ve always wanted to meet him he is my big fan but know its too late but i also want to send my love and sypmothy to his wife family of his lost

Bernie Mac is a legend he will be missed.
I remember the days of the Cotton Club
we would share laughs and have a real great time there
I was part of the house band that played at the Cotton Club
that had acts like R. Kelly And Cheryl Underwood..
