Marcus Leshock here! Summer movie season is officially here, the most exciting time of year for movie fans everywhere! Instead of doing your traditional Summer Movie Preview 2008, I've decided to actually rank the top 8 movies of the summer without seeing one of them! This way we can all sit down in September and have a good laugh at how wrong I was. So keep reading after the jump for my Top 8 movies on summer 2008, complete with each of their trailers!
8. WALL-E - June 27
Pixar looks to make it 9 hits in a row with WALL-E. It takes place in the year 2,700 and follows a robot who finds himself both the last living thing on earth. The animation looks absolutely amazing, and if Pixar's track record tells us anything, this should be great. I'm sure we'll find little WALL-E's on store shelves come Christmas time. Here's the trailer:
7. The Foot Fist Way - May 30
For some goofy reason this trailer just cracks me up. The Foot Fist Way is looking to become the next Napoleon Dynamite. It's a low budget indie comedy about a Tae Kwon Doe instructor who attacks the man who slept with his wife...then goes on a hilarious bender. The marketing concept is a little annoying, "Hey, Will Ferrell and Adam McKay quote this movie. That means the rest of the world will think it's funny." I wish they just let the movie speak for itself....but at least those guys are releasing it to the world. Here's the trailer:
6. Kung Fu Panda - June 6
Another movie getting GREAT early buzz. Jack Black is the lead voice in Kung Fu Panda...the latest from Dreamworks Animation that pays tribute to the greatest Kung Fu flicks ever. A few of my colleagues were able to attend a sneak preview here in Chicago a few months ago. From what I heard, it was great...both story and animation. So for Dreamworks, looks like they might be onto another "Shrek" here, as opposed to a "Shark Tale." Trailer....
5. Tropic Thunder - August 15
Ben Stiller is back in the director's chair with *Tropic Thunder*. I'm one of those people that fell in love with "Zoolander" once I saw it again on video. I'm pumped about "Tropic"....it's about a group of actors making a low-budget war film...and they find themselves trapped in a REAL war zone. It looks to be another goofy comedy full of a-list cameos....and Robert Downey Jr. playing a white actor who goes through a controversial surgery to land the role of a black man? Could be hilarious...could be a disaster. But if you're going to go down, go all out. Trailer...
4. Step Brothers - July 25
Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly team up for the first time since Talladega Nights in *Step Brothers.* Two grown men suddenly find themselves brothers when their parents decide to get married. It's also directed by "Anchorman" helmer Adam McKay. Assuming the plot is somewhat decent...it should be hilarious.
3. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull - May 22
I'm still a bit skeptical as to how it will stack up to the rest of the Indy trilogy. But the other three Indy films were SO good...it's not like George Lucas has ever taken a classic trilogy and tacked on an unnecessary, subpar addition! But honestly, I have complete faith that Spielberg and Harrison won't let me down. I'm predicting this movie performs ABOVE expectations. Here's the trailer...
2. Iron Man - May 2
The newest superhero on the block, "Iron Man" is the one of the best reviewed movies of all time. I know the movie opens the day that I'm posting this, but I still have not seen "Iron Man" yet. Robert Downey Jr. looks outstanding in the biggest movie of his life. I'm really excited to see it, and judging from the early buzz, it could hang around all summer long and end up being one of the most successful films of the season. Here's the spot...
1. Batman: The Dark Knight - July 18
Obvious, right? In my opinion, "Batman Begins" is the best superhero movie of all time. It was about time somebody took a superhero concept and made it truly plausible, and it really had a feel all its own. Of course "The Dark Knight" is going to belong to Heath Ledger, who died just after completing his work on the movie. His take on the Joker looks absolutely terrifying and magnificently fun all at once. Not sure if they can top "Batman Begins," but if they do, this could be one of the all-time classic summer films.
