The April issue of “Vogue,” featuring NBA star LeBron James and supermodel Gisele Bundchen has got tongues wagging. Sure, it’s the first cover in “Vogue” history to feature a black man, but that’s not what the controversy is all about.
(More after the jump...)
Critics are arguing that the magazine cover plays into racial stereotypes, portraying James as a scary, aggressive black man photographed with a beautiful, but helpless white woman. Some are even going so far as to compare the duo (snapped by famed photographer, Annie Leibovitz) to King Kong and Fay Wray…What do you make of these accusations? Is the cover being blown out of proportion or do the critics have a point?

The Vogue cover is inexcusable for this reason: Even if the photo was not intentionally alluding to the "ape" imagery, Annie Leibovitz and Anna Wintour, “experts” on imagery that they are, should have been able to look at that photograph and realize what feelings this type of image would evoke in the public eye.
Very bad taste......
