If you haven't yet spent that 20 bucks that you got from your Great Aunt Irene for the holidays at the bar...head to the record store and spend it on one of these new releases out this week...
SIA - "SOME PEOPLE HAVE REAL PROBLEMS"
...ya think? Anyway, Australia's Sia has returned with her 3rd full-length. She put herself on the map a couple of years ago with her hit single "Breathe Me", which actually was from her 2004 release 'Colour The Small One'...though nobody seemed to care about the song until it appeared a couple of years later on the Six Feet Under Soundtrack Vol.2 . Look for her at the Park West on Feb. 29.
VARIOUS ARTISTS - "JUNO SOUNDTRACK"
The soundtrack to "Juno" collects quite a range of artists. You'll find old school rock from The Kinks, Buddy Holly, and one of my favorite all-time songs "All The Young Dudes" by Mott The Hoople (a tune which, incidentally, has been expertly covered by David Bowie, Travis, and some others). As well, proto-punk heroes The Velvet Underground appear, plus Sonic Youth, and both indie folk artist Kimya Dawson and Britpop group Belle & Sebastian are all over the soundtrack.
KATE NASH - "MADE OF BRICKS"
Dublin born (but London raised) Kate Nash now has her already-hit record in the UK available here in the States. Her first love was acting, but after failing to get accepted into a theatre school, she reverted to music. Thanks to building a following via her Myspace page, her single "Foundations" ended up being a British smash. Folks on that side of the pond have embraced both Lily Allen and her contemporary Miss Nash..will the American audience have room on their radar screen for two English solo girls? We'll see, but I definitely like this record.
Happy listening!
cheers,
