Top 10 Stephen King Movies of All Time!

Stephen-King-2max.jpg

What's up everyone! Marcus Leshock here. With Stephen King's "The Mist" opening today, I thought it the perfect time to count down the best Stephen King movies ever. My top ten, including a few suprises, after the jump. Keep reading...and let me know if I missed one of your favorites!

10. Silver Bullet (1985)

OK, I know I’m going to take some heat for this one, but “Silver Bullet” is one of my all-time favorite guilty pleasures. Corey Haim stars along with Gary Busey, about a paralyzed kid who attempts to convince his family that a werewolf is killing people in his town. Gary Busey has a great drunk uncle moment in this movie, who’da thunk it?

9. Cujo (1983)

A rabid St. Bernard stalks a mother and child trapped in their car. One of King’s finest “trapped people” stories, Cujo gave me nightmares when I was a kid. The movie might be overacted a bit, but come on! The clips are all too gruesome for me to put up on this website, so that’s the perfect sign the movie is phenomenal!

8. The Green Mile (1999)

Frank Darabont directed this not-so-scary fantasy tale, about men working on death row who discover one of their convicts has the power of healing. Tom Hanks is great, along with the breakout performance by Michael Clarke Duncan. Frank Darabont directed, and he’ll be on the list again later.

7. The Mist (2007)

The latest King film is CLASSIC King. A mist rolls through a small town, leaving a small group of people trapped in a grocery store. Oh, the mist is killing people for some reason. Soon, people within the store begin to turn on one another – leading some to believe that the mist isn’t the real enemy after all. Once again Frank Darabont, a fun monster movie / pshychological thriller, with one of the best endings to a King movie yet.

6. Stand By Me (1986)

Another King semi-drama, about a group of kids who go on the hunt to find the body of a missing boy who was presumed dead. Great music, fantastic acting, one of those movies that reflected a time period just perfectly. Just a great story. If you haven’t yet seen “Stand by Me,” make it the next movie you pick up. Plus, Corey Feldman is in it, so it’s gotta be good!

5. It (1990)

The lone mini-series on my list, “It” was one of my childhood favorites. A group of kids in a small town are stalked by a mysterious clown who lives in the sewer! Tim Curry confirmed that clowns only exist for two purposes – eating people and threatening to eat people. BEEP BEEP RITCHIE!

4. The Shawshank Redemption (1994)

I continue the Frank Darabont love with one of the most inspirational movies of all time. Tim Robbins plays a man sentenced to life in jail. Inside the prison, Robbin’s character becomes somewhat of a powerful figure. Redemption can be had, even if you’re behind bars. A great story. Again, if you haven’t seen this, something is probably wrong with you. Consult a physician, then, for God sakes man, pick up this movie!

3. Misery (1990)

Another King favorite, Rob Reiner appears on my list for the second time. “Misery” is about a writer who gets in a terrible car accident, only to be rescued by his number one fan. Sounds great, but she keeps him trapped in her home until he finishes his next book, just for her. Kathy Bates plays the psycho – giving us one of the best movie villains of all time.

2. Carrie (1976)

“They’re all gonna laugh at you!” One of Brian DePalma’s best movies, “Carrie” perfectly epitomizes the horrors of being an outcast in high school. Sissy Spacek plays the strange girl, who discovers that she’s different, in a supernatural way. The split-screened conclusion was way ahead of its time, and the moment Carrie wins Prom Queen would go down as one of Hollywood’s most memorable moments. Outstanding film.

1. The Shining (1980)
WARNING: INTENSE CLIP:

Stanley Kubrik’s classic film has to top my list. Jack Nicholson is phenomenal as Jack Torrence, a writer watching a snowed-in, haunted hotel for the winter. Slowly, past caretakers come out of the woodwork and take over Jack’s man. Eventually he’s chasing his family around the hotel with an axe, giving us some awesome Jackisms, and scaring the heck out of Shelly Duvall. This is one of my favorite movies of all time. REDRUM!

It also gives me the opportunity to show you this hilarious recut trailer for the movie. Imagine if Stephen King’s tale was a romantic dramedy instead. What would THAT be like? Hmmmmm:

So, do you have a favorite Stephen King movie? Leave a comment and tell me how much a screwed up. If not, I'll assume my list is perfect!

Other great choices are the movie The Stand, The other version of The Shining (which I like better because it shows the true degredation of Jack Torrence), Rose Red and Storm of the Century. I never cared much for Cujo, myself or the Silver Bullet, but hey, to each his own, right:)

If you never saw the second The Shining, I highly recommend it.
