Hot Fuzz 3-Disc Blowout! Marcus's DVD Pick of the Week for 11/27!

This week’s DVD Pick of the Week has been in stores for months, but it’s back with a whopping 3-Disc Collector’s Edition. If you don’t own “Hot Fuzz” already, now’s the time to buy. More about the movie, and an interview with the cast and creator, after the jump….

“Hot Fuzz” is the latest fare from the guys who brought you “Shaun of the Dead.” But whatever you do, don’t call them spoof films. Their fans hate it. “Shaun” was a zombie film, if the title didn’t tell you that already, whereas “Hot Fuzz” roasts Michael Bay style action thrillers.

Simon Pegg returns once again, this time as Sgt. Nicolas Angel, a cop on the top of his game. This cop is SO good his bosses have him dispatched OUT of London. Nobody wants to look bad, and that’s what Nick Angel does. Make other cops look bad.

Upon arriving in his new small town, people start getting killed, and with the help of his new police force, Nick tracks the bad guys down. Of course it’s all pretty tongue in cheek, complete with a 30 minute conclusion that had me laughing in riots. I can’t remember a movie where I laughed so hard for such a long period of time. The moment the town priest flung two pistols out of his black robe and starting firing, I had officially ruined my pants. It’s just that funny.

Somewhat quickly, the guys behind “Hot Fuzz” have become the new Monty Python. I was lucky enough to sit down and chat with them earlier this year. Here’s the interview:

“Hot Fuzz” has been available on DVD for some time, but the U.S. version was lacking some of the features from the U.K. disc. Upon feeling the wrath of Frostitutes across the country, Rogue Pictures has now released the definitive 3-Disc Collector’s Edition. This set combines all of the features from BOTH versions, including 4 different commentaries. You heard these guys, they are hilarious, i.e. a commentary you’ll actually enjoy listening to.

There’s also a commentary track with director Edgar Wright and Quentin Tarantino. Weird pairing, but they actually worked together in “Grindhouse” through Wright’s fake trailer “Don’t.” In case you missed it, here’s a crummy version on YouTube:

From making-of featurettes, to short films from years past, the “Hot Fuzz” 3-Disc set is essential owning material for any Edgar Wright/Nick Frost/Simon Pegg fan. And if you haven’t checked out one of their films yet, please don’t let the funny accents scare you away. “Hot Fuzz” is the funniest movie of the year. Aside from “Superbad,” it’s funnier than ANY American film in recent memory.
