We're all looking for ways to cut back a little and save a few bucks - and believe me, I'm always on the lookout for an opportunity to do something myself instead of hiring it out. But there are places you skimp a little (no one's going to know if that bag is designer or a knock off) and there are places you just don't. And one place it's never okay to cut corners is with your new home.
If you're in the process of buying a new place, getting an inspection is a must. Although it's not legally required, it is within your best interest as a buyer to have a professional check out the home you're about to make a serious commitment to. And this isn't a job for dad either, (unless of course, your dad happens to be a home inspector...) professional inspectors know how to spot whether a home has had problems that might pop up again in the future. They have a keen eye to find problems that the owner may not know about or might be trying to mask so that the home gets sold. It's worth the few hundred dollars that it costs - because in the long run, a bad home investment could cost you much, much more.
